I wouldn't worry too much Kassia. I am sure that WOS will continue in some form as long as there are still Speccy enthusiasts.

It is true that WOS is arguably one of the best retro computing sites out there and I too hope that it will continue, but it is a lot of work for one person regardless of their personal situation. Martijn has done it for a long time now!

What I do know is that several people have backups of the archive and so the information won't get lost.

I guess the best thing is to wait and see how things work out.

Yes Martijn's done so much for so long, if he's to retire he'll go with our best wishes and a toast for the marvellous work he has done to this website.

But I'd want him to pass the site over to someone he trusts and say goodbye and not disappear forever. I don't want to see it go and I'm worried also about the future of new Spectrum games, there's probably tons of new games available and we've not seen them because of no updates.

I don't know, I shouldn't worry so much I know, but I can't help but feel that way, as an enthusiast and all.

You are right Kasia. Are you female, by the way? ;)

WOS won't disappear but may fall into decline and stagnation.

Without any new content on the site what will we be talking about?

Yet another topic of "scary games on the Spectrum", repeated for the 5th time? ;)

Why should I preserve missing games if nobody will add the to the site?
Why should I create new games if nobody will add them to the site?
Why should I create maps, pokes and bugfixes if nobody will add them to the site?

Without site updates everything will be hanging on some fragile links which will today appear and tomorrow disappear.

People are willing to upload stuff, yet, but if nobody deals with it, they'll stop doing it too.

We must do something people, don't sit, don't wait, don't watch but really talk to Martijn and arrange something about the site updates.

Who has a good contact with him, knows phone number etc.?

Yes I am female, Kasia's a Polish female name isn't it? ;) I'm not Polish though, it's just a pseudonym, inspired by Polish expats.

But seriously, that's what worries me the most, whatever Martijn does in his life, good luck to him and may he have many happy years to come, but what happens to us, users, authors, contributors, followers, what about us? What do we have?

You obviously do a lot for World of Spectrum which is a great thing, but there'll come a time when all your hard work isn't being rewarded, probably right now by the sounds of it.

My partner for instance had artist information, composer information, instructions typed up and was even considering revamping the site's AY department as long as he has the right tools, but now he's got no desire for any of it, "what's the point, it'll never be included anyway" he said to me just last week.

If Martijn's better off without this site, so be it, let him be, but at least ignite this site's flame, somehow, someway.

No worries Kasia and other fine WoSsers. Martijn's love for all things Speccy-and-WoS-related hasn't gone out. The flame for WoS is being stoked by Mr. V.d.Heide himself.

    Let's not worry so much!

    Hapy New Year Martijn ;-)

We have one phrase in Czech language for it:

"As you do on New Year you will do all year!" :-)

In Poland we have is too - "jaki nowy rok, taki cały rok" :)

I'm happy to see this update, let's hope they'll be more frequent.

This is my personal archive, it may be of help. You can find a script to extract the tags from the folder names and output a csv file. It is provisional but quite functional to play games from any computer connected to the internet

Let me just say that I'm as happy as the next guy that the site is being updated again, but i think we should refrain from putting too much pressure on Mr. Martijn.
He IS, after all, 'just' human, although he may seem like a God to us. :p

    So without further ado:

Welcome back, Martijn, and Happy New Year! :D

    Hi hioki :)

I just want to let you know that you're more than welcome to add any content from my site you might wish:
    https://sites.google.com/site/bertyfromdk/speccy-amstrad-related-stuff

    Happy New Year :D

P.S. the +3 Manual is a working, but slightly rough version; it's my intention to clean it up a bit more, but leisurely (I have other Speccy projects on my plate as well :D ). When i feel i'm done, i'll submit it directly to WoS.

He's not, we know where he is. We spoke to him earlier this month.

    Be patient, everything is good.

At a guess the next update will come around the time Einar finishes the next component of the Buddy system, if past updates are anything to go by. :)

Is Martijn adding games to the database? I came across some entries I dont seem to remember, without loading screenshot and in-game screenshot, which I have the feeling that they were not there before ??

It is having an effect on the forum. Having regular updates fules the forum. Last few months here theres not been much going on. It's getting a bit boring. I wish someone else would take the reigns.

Also, I regularly used to scan in fresh inlays and gumpf if I found something on WOS in inferior quality to what I had on my shelf. That's pointless doing now because whatever it is is just going to sit there in limbo till lord knows when.

Hmmm... I think I've played more brand new Speccy games in the last few months than I have at any time since about 1987! El Stompo, Sunbucket, Ninjajar, Abbaye Des Morts, DreamWalker, Killer Bees... from where I'm sitting (as primarily a gamer) there's loads going on.

I think the high water mark of the forum was back in 2009. People have been drifting away since then without a similar number of new people coming in to replace them, but I expect it will keep trundling on. There's still life in comp.sys.sinclair, just.

There is a lot of new games but the website is actually getting a bit boring with no updates and little amount of good, non-technical topics.

Soon they may be more coders than players on Speccy ;)
