People on TV who you never see

edited September 2013 in Chit chat
At work today the topic of fictional characters you never see in TV series came about. People like Howard's mum in The Big Bang Theory, who you never see, though you hear her voice often enough. Or Maris (Niles' wife, from Fraiser), who you never see (or hear, as far as I can remember). Obviously there's lots of characters who'd fit this description, but we meant ones who the writers perhaps deliberately don't show.

The list we came up with is:

Frank Columbo's wife (Columbo)
Norm's wife (Cheers),
The company owner, who works 'upstairs', and is often referred to and they are all a little intimidated by (Taxi),
Maris, Niles' wife (Fraiser),
Mr Sweeny's mother (One Foot in the Grave),
Sir Roysten Merchent (Drop the Dead Donkey),
Howard's mum (The Big Band Theory),
"'Er indoors", Arthur Daley's wife (Minder),
Al Bundy's mother in law (Married... With Children),

Can anyone think of any more?

Actually, in one episode near the end of last season you saw her walking around in the background while Raj was staying there ;)

But I hope that's all we see of her otherwise the jokes about her won't be as good.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

In the same episode, she pulls Raj back in through the window he's trying to climb out of! I watched it the other night :-)

Talking about TBBT, I think it's really going downhill now. I was quite disappointed with series 6. The first 4 episodes were just not funny at all and it's now, more than ever all about their relationships more than the guys pratting about! The series picked up abit near the end, but it won't be a season I'll be reaching for very often :-(

Back on topic, you never see Mrs Manwaring in Dad's Army. Only in one episode do you see her "dip" in the bunk bed above Cpt Manwaring in a shelter scene, but that's it. You don't see her at all, just the mattress buldge

Don't remember ever seeing Mrs. Bouquet's* son** she keeps going on about on the phone. Been a while though since I last saw that on TV.

Actually, this is not quite true. In season 5, episode 9, "Thanksgiving Orphans", she does appear but her face is covered in a pie after a food fight. You can see all of her apart from the face.

first thing I thought, but then I remembered there's an episode where you accidentally see his face, think it's the one where Beach Boys were the guest stars. can't find the right bit on youtube but I have seen it :-)

That's right (well aside from what's mentioned above).

Think that actor died last year (mentioned in one of myriads of RIP threads on here*).

    * The casket was open chest down**, in remembrance of that character.

The character David in League of Gentlemen, but only from series 2 onwards, as you do see him when he's normal in the first series, before he became the mysterious murderous attic dwelling freak that he is.

There's another one I just thought of Charlie Brown, or Snoopy, Peanuts or whatever, you never see the teacher, you just hear the garbled Alice the Goon type voice.

Aye, it started going downhill not long before Howard and Bernadette got married. It's still ocasionally funny but nothing like it used to be and it'll probably be worse with what happened right at the end of the last episode.

Dick Tracy in the old Dick Tracy cartoons, you only ever saw him talking into his 1930's communicator watch :D

Usually to a sidekick who was something like a talking dog, and who was usually the star of the cartoon.
