    Don't be sorry. It's ace.
  • There's a review of C.G.D in this months retro gamer.

Not sure R-Tape would agree with the reviewer's assertion that it was originally designed as a tool to make CGC entries!

Don't look at me, that's what he told me it was originally!

Cool, look forward to seeing that on my doormat when I get home!

Yeah that was the original idea but not so much now. I think it's more fun now to try and make an oldschool game that's fun, or do something different with it. Of course it's perfectly capable of making a crap game!

When first making it I considered adding features like 'sprite flicker' and such, but faking a crap game isn't in the spirit of the comp in my opinion.

I think R-Tape has created a monster with this. Everything released that I've played so far has been simple to pick up and distressingly playable...

Have you considered porting CGD to other 8-bit platforms?

...If you do, you could be halfway towards taking over the world... :D

guys be careful with CGD...it can be very addictive: I am already at my third game and I don't seem to be able to stop :D

PS where can i find the review on CGD?

It's in this month's Retro Gamer magazine. I'm not sure if it's published outside the UK.

Managed to make a frogger game with your tutorial, and nice work on this tool!
(You should get it on the WOS database ASAP.)

Yep, be careful not to mix up ink and paper in the blocks. It can be deceptive when doing the UDGs. (you've also missed out some binding blocks). See the 'fixed' possible example below:

    fix here

In the above example, after checking out the map, in the block editor, press x to clear blocks 0,1,3. This removes ink leaving only black paper and you'll see what I mean :-)

Hope that helps and you develop this idea further! I like it! (EDIT - in fact I love it - a touch of Rally Driver about it!)

Thanks! I managed to get what I was looking for:

I will adjust some things (how long is a GCD timer "second"?) but I'm glad you like it! :D
EDIT: I'm having problems trying to type a copyright symbol in the text editor, damm the Speccy keyboard is annoying at times! :-x
Also, is there a way to make the game start instantly rather than wait for a key press on the game screen?

Oh yeah! 87%, might be my best yet?!

Heh I wouldn't know how to go about it. I imagine the Amstrad is similar, but do the C64 and BBC have the same rich cultural heritage of UDGs as the Speccy?

It's close-ish to a real second, but it depends how much action is going on the screen. Best to see what feels best I'd say.

Hmm, weird, even using the correct keypress the (c) symbol gives a speech mark. Maybe design the symbol somewhere else in the font designer?

Yep - if you redefine the keys (press R at the game test start) every time after that it should immediately start.

Thanks for the workaround, but it would be worth fixing that. ;)

Worked! :-) Hopefully it should stay like that when I make a .tap...

Also, I would also like to see CGD on other 8bit computers. (Anything to keep those blasted C64 users happy...)

Since you are not familiar with other 8-bit platforms, you could consider to open source C.G.D. and look for developers from other platforms to port it.

This way, they would get lots of new games at once, and you would have more time to improve C.G.D. and create new games yourself.
Creator of ZXDB, BIFROST/NIRVANA, ZX7/RCS, etc. I don't frequent this forum anymore, please look for me elsewhere.

The C64 doesn't; there are some examples (although most of them are ported from the VIC 20 like Jeff Minter's early blasters or the C16 like Proof Of Destruction and Spore) but, since even the C64 manual documents the hardware sprites reasonably well, even the beginners tend towards using them.

Finished a "minigame" with this tool called Speccy Rally!

Its a simple yet hard racing game that I think would be better in a compilation rather than be distributed by it self.
Here is a .z80, please tell me your score! ;)

I will do this (the source code is already available but I won't link to it yet as I'm doing a small update). Although there are some bits of it I'm quite proud of, like the way I've organised the jump tables for blocks, I don't expect it to be much use to a 'proper' coder, who would probably be best just starting from scratch.

I would love to see CGD for other 8bits but I can't see there being enough interest.

Aye I was looking through the early C64 stuff and noticed they tend to have big sprites, though looking at 1982 C64 stuff some of the games have the 'classic' game look.

    Too easy! :-P

Like it though, any chance you could share the z80 of the file embedded in CGD (email me or link?), I might be able to suggest some additions to make a longer game if you're interested.

    Thanks for using CGD.

I think you're right. CGD celebrates a unique crapness quality of the Speccy. Back in the day people would buy Amstrad or C64 because they didn't want to be the butt of all the jokes in the playground. Porting CGD to those platforms just fundamentally wouldn't work.

By the way, that rally game is pretty good :) CGD is so versatile!

You could probably hold a CGD competition with the amount of use it has been getting.

Not a bad idea for 2014, Cheers  (People might be sick of it by then though!)

C.G.D has now been updated and has a few extra block types. Not too different from the previous version but at least the instructions match the editor.

The home of C.G.D is now: zxsandbox.blogspot.co.uk, where you can download all the gubbins.

And I'm pleased to announce Gabam has created a great new game: PYROMANIA: Trial by fire.

    game1.gif

Plays well, best UDGs ever, brilliant music(and funny choice of song) by Neil Parsons.
