Kindle problem

edited October 2013 in Chit chat
I've had my Kindle 3 (WiFi) for just 2 years now. Recently, it's been lying on the shelf for a month without charge as I've been exceptionally busy.

The other day I picked it up to find a message saying "critical battery error" and it was asking me to restart the kindle, which I did after plugging it and charging it for a couple of hours.

Now the kindle restarts but remains stuck at 25 percent on the Kindle startup screen (with the tree). I've now tried restarting multiple times but with the same result. Reading up on the forums and the Net has led me to one possible solution - a factory reset. But this will involve me losing all my content!

Anyone know of a solution to this or should I just bite the bullet and roll the dice?

A factory reset should not be a problem if you've bought your content and/or have content on your PC for downloading like the books you can get from Project Gutenberg.

I recently bought a second Kindle from somebody I know and I had to reset that. As soon as I'd registered it with Amazon all of my content was available. No problem, nothing lost. This is partly because I tend to email non-amazon stuff (project Gutenberg and my own pdfs and documents etc) to my kindle whispernet account rather than direct download via a PC.

I hope this gives you some confidence that a reset won't be a problem :)
  • Any books you've bought from Amazon can be re-downloaded at any time. I've heard talk of a hard reset, holding power button for 30 seconds or something. Not sure where I read that.

Hmm... well I tried a factory reset and it still boots to the same thing! Bloody hell!

Looks like I have to try the remove-battery-and-let-it-discharge trick. A bit difficult considering I fully charged the batter just yesterday!
