  The short answer is that you can't get them in DIP any more (iirc the spansion website claims they still manufacture them but no-one has stock).
  
  I would switch to a PLCC. This doesn't mean a new board, just solder the chip onto a DIP breakout board

  Just buy adpater with socket - no need to solder PLCC.

  That only makes sense if you intend changing the chip at all. For a flash chip that can be reprogrammed in circuit it's pretty pointless.

  Thanks to all. I ordered an adapter board as well as 1024MAK also offered me to help out. One of these two options will hopefully work.
  
  Also I have no feedback from PCB supplier, so no need to rush.
