So instead I'll nominate the likes of Driller, Castlemaster and Total Eclipse (all the fancy 3d ones basically) as they looked amazing buuuuuuut weren't very playable
Any of the isometric games really (Head Over Heals etc) spring to mind for me! They may be technically great, groundbreaking at times, but they all bore me senseless!

Nothing made my heart sink faster back in the day than waiting ages for a game to load, only to find out it was one of those style games :-(
I fully realise that I'll be in a minority here ;-)
The 3D isometric games were my favourite genre on the Spectrum for a while and i played a lot of them, sadly not all of them were that good.
Horses f'courses again. I loved most of the 3D isometric games (even Pentagram and some of the more iffy Firebird/Mastertronic budget releases). Never got into stuff like Lords of Midnight, I just didn't have the patience... still don't :(

I find it very interesting that several games mentioned in this thread appeared in my personal list of top 10 Spectrum games ever!
My #2 favorite.
My #4 favorite.
My #6 favorite.
Don't get me wrong I was blown away by them....still am weirdly, but they just take soooooo looooooong toooooo mooooooove that I don't think I had the patience back then. Might fire em up now and see if that's changed
The reality is a slow, confusing and bizarre game that I struggled to properly enjoy beyond the two or three screens I was able to navigate.
But it did get loaded up quite often as the look of the game was something I had never seen before, though essentially a platform game it was a game that was presented with the graphics as close to real as possible with no 'Mario' style jumping and falling.

It's probably slow due to the amount of the RAM power needed to run the graphics because they're so big and colourful, i liked it but found it too hard and eventually gave up.

Big sprites, colourful and ambitious.
