Some interesting comments about the game from the author, here.
It appears it was meant to be one of the updated games Ocean provided for the 128 launch (International Match Day presumably being the other). In the end just Supertest and Neverending Story were bundled, with the other two appearing on that Stars on 128 compilation linked above.
I'm surprised that many people here don't know about 128kB Yie Ar Kung Fu.
It has quite a lot of differences compared to 48 kB version: AY music, new font, more enemies...
I also believe that the fight algorithms itself were changed and 128kB version is easier. Would be interesting if somebody could confirm it or deny it.
The original 48k backdrops were redrawn for the 128k version. The new versions looked nicer, but they introduced horrendous colour clash! That wasn't well thought through...
Re. the Spectrum 128k bundle mentioned by an earlier poster; I got Supertest 128k and International Match day with mine. I got Stars on the 128k later as a free gift included with a Your Sinclair subscription.
I've given up playing it now. Maybe if you didn't get extra lives it would be better. It is just far too easy, I'll be playing forever, and I'm not even trying really.
48k version is a much better game, the 128k version looks and sounds nice, but it's not a good game.

I'm a bit dissappointed TBH.
Careful I said something similar about 6 years ago and a few people on here went mental on me
I said something about it being shockingly easy and twitchy as f**k, or words to that effect.......*whispers I think one of the people who worked on it was here and he got a little miffed at what I said ;)

Nice that 128K Kung Fu got released, it was my 1st full commercial assembler
project entirely written by myself so I was quite pleased with it..looking
back am sure it was rubbish but everyone liked it at the time.

It is a bit twitchy at times as well.
I only found out a few days ago while reading the Ocean the History book. Was also surprised.

I just came back here to ask if it was easier than the 48k version.
On my 4th time round now, can't see me ever losing all my lives at this rate.
