What am I missing? Won't it just be a regular bluetooth device that any app can access?
I was interested as long as I could use it with my tablet or PC, but if its locked to iOS I can't see me getting so much use from it. Especially if other apps are locked out even on that.

For the full gory details read the kickstarter pitch.
The short version -
It will only work on iOS devices.
It will only be certified to work with certain iOS apps - These will be a subset of the games Elite have released - NOT all Elites releases. (purchased separately - even if you already own them)
It will not play nicely or even at all with Windows / Linux / Android / OSX / whatever devices.

Really? Well, in that case I can unsubscribe from their email list!
After out eldest coming home from uni this week to tell us that her 12 month old iPhone lost wifi immediately after installing iOS 7 - and the manager of the rather large store in Manchester telling me that it was because the "update detected a fault with the wifi chip and decided to disable it for you", I've decided to stick with anything else.
Grr - he mentioned that "the chip might have been OK for another 12 months" so when I asked why it didn't give her the option to rollback the update he just blinked!

It is being developed for iOS first, with other phones and tablets to follow. They also mention PC and Mac support.
Quotes from Elite's Kickstarter page (bold is mine):
The recreated Sinclair ZX Spectrum will be a Bluetooth keyboard, initially for iOS and subsequently Android / Windows phones & tablets.
initially for iOS and subsequently for Android and Windows phones and tablets (as well as for PCs and Macs), in the form-factor of a 48K Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
the Bluetooth ZX Spectrum will also be a Bluetooth keyboard for other apps available from the iTunes App Store and subsequently from the Google Play, Amazon App Store and Windows Store and also applications running on PCs and Macs, making it possible to, say, type a letter on a PC using a Spectrum!

I had that with my 4S earlier this year (upgrading to 6.1.3) which was fortunately under warranty so they replaced it. This is a last resort thing, but some claim that it completely fixed their wifi, and that's to seal it in a freezer bag and put in the freezer for 15 minutes. It worked with mine, but only for about half an hour.

Another VERY important quote from the kickstarter page in relation to this conversation.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This appeal is for the Bluetooth ZX Spectrum for iOS devices. You are advised not to pledge, if you have other devices, until we announce otherwise.
At least they are being honest that anything except iOS support is nothing more than vapourware.
The thing I love most about Apple stores is that everyone who works there is young and Cool but completely clueless about there products!
(An after thought) - If elite makes these new speccy clones, will that mean that nobody else will have the right to make replacement faceplates and keyboard membranes anymore????
It was first proposed in 2011 for the 2012 30th anniversary of the Speccy. I guess these days Elite is a small company and hasn't got the cash behind it to take a risk like this.
I'm not really in the market for the new 'Spectrum' as I have an original and don't play games on a tablet. If I use my laptop or desktop for Spectrum games then the regular keyboard is fine.
But if I didn't have a real Spectrum, yes I'd be in the market for sure. I hope they can carry the ZX Spectrum name into the 21st century.
Not really interested in the iPhone/Bluetooth thingy, but I would genuinely be interested in a Sinclair branded netbook ZX Spectrum style with grey/blue (non rubber) keys.
Commode did something similar with the Vic 20 and C64 recently.
Does Amstrad still own the rights to the Sinclair brand?

Did you mean the C64x?
I think they should take the 48k and give it a beefing up, but like the C64x
Keep a classic mode for loading from tape, basic programming etc. But just not the stupid price that commodore wanted. I think with a +2 size case you could get some good stuff in there? I'd just prefer the 48k. More iconic!

Yeah, that's the one! The C64x looks like an old C64, I'd prefer a Spectrum version netbook size with screen though. The old 48k is ideal netbook size!
They want stupid prices for them though and then its not worth it for novelties sake. Same as the speccy and commodore USB keyboards, im sure alot of work goes into them but ?100 is steep for a keyboard.

Agree.
Thats why I bought Libretto notebook, but still havent decided to take it apart and do something like this. :) http://srimech.com/zxlaptop.html

That's the sort of thing I'm on about, but I'd draw the line at cannibalizing old Spectrums!

My gut feeling is 'why?!'
...plus at least 5 other thread too.
My games for the Spectrum: Dingo, The Speccies, The Speccies 2, Vallation, SQIJ.

Yep, realised as soon as I posted.
