Has Prince finally lost the plot re:- piracy?

hes apparently taken ?13m legal action against 22 FANS for distributing bootlegs of his concerts.
I'm sorry but i think he's finally rocked off his rocker, or feels far too big for a dwarf.
I know the songs are his copyrighted material, i know he doesnt want people earning from HIS music but cmon, they are bootlegs, theyre not available to buy

i know its legally a bit of a grey area collecting live bootlegs. but fans want to hear and keep everything they can on their favourite artist, if they cant buy the thing then they will tape it, or in this case download it.

I was just thinking the other day that you don't seem to hear from him anymore.
He must be knocking on a bit now?

    <EDIT>He's 55; not so bad.</EDIT>

yes, he's mental...it's not even piracy for profit is it, just fans trading live shows of their favourite artist. you can find live bootlegs online of pretty much every major recording artist of the past 50 years no biggie, but prince has a problem...

Did he not piss s record label of a few years ago for releasing a new album free with the Daily Mail of somthing.

I love prince's music. I can kind of see his point in wanting to stop the bootlegs, because he makes most his money off is concert performances. Keeping them exclusive is part of that.

However, if what is reported is true it does seem a little heavy handed.

If you've got a spare half hour it's worth listening to Kevin Smith's recollection of working with prince on a documentary which got scrapped.

remember the "symbol" mylarky and him on TOTP in a veil..

it was 2007 that the mail carried his cd

he was making the money off the live gigs he did anyway.. and could still make money off.

some superfans I know have everything including the bootlegs, not prince someone else who could sell out stadiums in seconds (no, not mrs mills ;) )

one of my top 20 songs ever, the artist behind that version gave me it on a CDR.. saw the pen written cd the other day :) . I'd not twigged it was him behind the version I liked..was funny.

and meanwhile over in daily mail land..

If he's smart enough to be able to distribute through newspapers then I don't mind forgiving him this once.

(Not completely my kind of music, but it's always good publicity.)

He pissed off distributers as well! I was working at HMV at the time and I remember them being really angry about it too. We ended up selling copies of that weeks Mail on Sunday as, and I think I rememnber the wording, "our customers deserve to be able to buy their music from a proper music shop, rather than some news agents"

HMV have never made a secret of their dislike of free magazine and newspaper giveaways as they feel that it affects their sales. They have a point too as I once bought a DVD in HMV for ?9.99, then picked up my copy of DVD World (RIP) from my newsagents on the way home, only to find the exact same film, extras included, on the cover of said magazine. I took the DVD back for a refund
