Today I got hassled by some sheep for no reason

edited March 2014 in Chit chat
On my hike today (37.6 miles if anyone is interested) for no reason, I got hassled by some sheep, they all ganged up on me, and started gently bumping into me.

6 hours later, I was ready for them, camera all set up, filmed myself opening the gate, commentary ready, and they totally ignored me.

They probably thought you were the shepherd coming to feed them....

Well either that or one of those "local boys" who visit them on a Saturday after dark... :D

people go a bit "mushy" about not eating lamb.. but sheep are little sods compared to cows, if you herd them. you'd think it would be the other way around due to their size. They will quite happily barge you or do a mass.. "steam" (remember that from school ? ) .. so don't let the cloud like extera fool ya

the camera was probably alien to them, hence why they weren't so keen to annoy ya.. they might have thought it was a weapon

you do have to be careful with them, as the farmer who I used to help herd them got kicked in the leg by one, and it ended up killing him a few hours later.. think it was a blood clot or something along them lines in his leg IRC.

although I am not a veggie, I do think it's good that folk know where their dinner is coming from.. think you don't take it for granted as much.

the initial mad charge it was mental, it's a big old empty field, and the sheep were all scattered far from me and when I walked through the gate they just all charged at me, and then followed me about

mind you, I was a bit scared last week went through a field of bulls and when I came back, they'd all gathered around the style and I had to tip toe past them all, and was bricking it

and then I felt embarrassed as a family of locals complete with toddlers and tricycles just passed through the same field LOL

its what they do, your intruding on their field, its protection, you should try picking up a lamb, then prepare to run lol, i had to climb up a pylon once :P

Ewe probably arrived at feeding time, and when you went back later they'd been fed.
  • When I was a nipper I went to a petting zoo and got savaged by an over-enthusiastic lamb trying to wrestle the bottle of milk out of my hand.

Therapy is working but it's a long, slow process.

I think you're ok if there are several bull(ock)s, it's when one is alone in its field that you can have trouble. I've walked past several bulls but all were with their herd and didn't bother me. You should also beware of cows with young calves, they will also attack if you get to close to the calf.

Of course, they might have recognised your leather jacket :D
