talking of Scotland I saw some documentary a while back (could've been one of those donal Macintyre ones) where here was going round some area of Glasgow where it was common for kids to reach school leaving age without having ever left the square mile or so of the area they live in! one kid said his secondary school was the furthest he'd ever been from his own house. and it was apparently down to gang rivalry gone down through generations, if you're from a certain area you never go in another area etc...
Yeah, I think a combination of things has affected most places. Smoking ban, ludicrous beer prices - it's just been an accumulation of things.
Another thing as to why pubs are dying is that kids (by that I mean 15-25 year olds give or take) aren't frequenting them any more. At one time you would see kids who clearly weren't 18 either trying to be served at the bar or drinking at it. Now whenever I go out I don't see that.
This maybe as has been pointed due to the smoking ban and/or the high price of alcohol, but I have feeling that the 'Challenge 25' schemes (a policy in pubs/off-licences and supermarkets where the barperson/checkout operator is required to ask for ID of any person they suspect of being under 25) haven't helped, as although you are over 18 and therefore legally able to buy booze, it gives the message that your custom is not welcome.
Cheap offy and supermarket booze does not help pubs for sure and it is simply less costly to stay at home with cans and bottles,I have done that but find it boring as hell,I mean most Saturday night tv is utter pants and the booze you drink just becomes an anesthetic to block it out, personally I would rather get a bus day ticket travel out of town and pay ?3 a pint for ale than stay in with cans and suffer assholes Ant 'n Dec and The crud Cube but that is just me I guess loll

Personally I just get a few cans for the weekend along with some homebrew and play on the PC/PS3/PS4 until about midnight - can't stand the vast majority of British TV. It's quite something to be three sheets to the wind and still be good at a videogame :-) I've always been happy with my own company (don't get me wrong, back in the day I was never in) but how long I'll be able to keep that up now my kids are approaching the wrong side of 10 is anyone's guess :-(

Has British TV continued its downward spiral?
Personally, I don't have Sky or Terrestrial TV.
I just have a DVD player and will only watch 'classic' movies and serials.
Tell me, is Chris Moyles still on Radio 1?

Judging by the utter ****e the missus and the kids watch then yup - though to be fair there are the occasional gems (Sherlock, Luther, Stargazing Live, etc)! To be honest I only really watch the news, Top Gear repeats, some Sky 1 stuff and the footie on normal telly. I've got hundreds of hours of great US TV that I put through XBMC so most nights that's all I'm watching.
No idea about Chris Moyles, I gave up on Radio 1 years ago and switched to Wogan on R2. I cycle to work nowadays so don't listen to the radio any longer.

To be fair, there is the odd gem. Sherlock was passable and, despite historical and technical inaccuracies, Micro Men was superb.
My last UK employer used to have all their radios tuned to Radio 1.
Chris Moyles, for some reason, was the factory employee's favourite DJ.
Round our way street lighting is turned off at midnight and doesn't come back on till 5.00am. I think it's part of Essex Council's scheme to help down on their luck criminals. It certainly makes the prospect of a night out less appealing.

Crikey, that doesn't sound good...
Mind you, it would be great for astronomers.

You have street lights? You lucky, lucky bastard!
There's only 4 street lights in my whole village!

Stop moaning, we're all in this together. Just ask David Cameron, who's several houses probably don't get more than one police patrol drive by every fifteen minutes. As compared to round here where you never (and I mean that literally) see police on patrol, and it's gotten to a point now where for 'minor' crimes (break-ins where little was taken, etc) some people don't even tell the police, unless they want the crime number for the insurance.
Funny how even though we all pay tax, the services you receive in return depends on the area you live in, isn't it?

Has there been an increase in crime where you live?
Has there been an increase in crime where you live?
Depends on what time frame you mean, it's been like this since the 90s anyway, although I think it has gotten worse over time, ten or more years back at least people were more likely to call the cops if a crime was committed, and they still do if it's a serious crime, but no one expects the police (or the courts) to do anything.
Edit: I don't want to talk about this, as it only gets me heated up (I hate social injustice and the state of the country today) so I've started a post on WOS about the Castlevania games (someone on another forum mentioned how great Castlevania Symphony of the Night is, which I've heard/read a lot of times).

I've heard of systems with sensors that'll turn them back on again when a car is approaching too.
There's also this - luminescent road markings:
