Retrocomputing shops in London, any suggestions?

Next Thursday I am leaving for London for a 11-day trip and would like to know if there are some retrocomputing shops or similar places where I could find Spectrum-related hardware - computers, peripherals etc.

pm a shopping list if you want, only spectrum related though haha.. although I have some c64 budget things and cpc things.

London is too expensive and there are very few shops, so the shops will reflect their expensive rent in their prices to you.
there is retro game base.. RGB in streham I think, and Computer EXchange's but they don't do old stuff.

if you're staying with friends then just get it posted to their address? I don't do that myself as it's not covered by paypal.. other sellers might though.

Yes - I'm sad to say, but you will be very lucky to find anything Alessandro.

There was a time, when Tottenham Court Road was absolutely full of shops that were an electronics paradise. Those days are now long gone

thing is , with ebay etc it's not too bad.. well I say that if you are UK based really.. also if you are prepared to travel a bit. bottom line is there is no money in 8 bit to sustain a real shop.. due to the limited amount of sales.. well perhaps c64 disk games etc and a few choice titles.

so many retro shops start / close here it is pointless due to business rates being crippling.. storage units are an interesting way to get around that as the rates aren't the same.

Alessandro which bit of london also ? north or south

The thread search option is your friend and you should use it before going over old ground.

Ebay is a much better solution, but very often I see this in the description:
    "Shipping worldwide, except Italy."
What's that all about, how its possible that many sellers are willing to send in African countries, but not in Italy?

    haha

Pegaz , never had any africans looking for horace goes skiing etc.. I'm sure others will state the same... did send a few joystick adapters to SA, but that was only because someone I know vouched for them and they were only sent insured.

sadly my dealings with italy have either been scams (e.g. 2 user names, one to buy/lie about getting them to get a refund, all bad feedback from brits.. username 2, to relist the same item) or magically vanishing items. Sadly I have had bad experiences with spain and france also , to a lesser extent.

my italian friend confirmed this when he visited with his wife, when I said oh I'll send you something.. to which he replied, no point 50% of it gets stolen before it even gets here.. that's coming direct from an Italian.

if you are posting the same cost again as the item.. then it getting "lost" is a big issue and I'd rather not take the dent in my pocket any more.

I don't mind if I have things he wants and is coming here, as he posts a lot here.. that's a different matter though. I'd not do that for everyone.

I sell on Ebay (and other sites) for a living and Italy is a notorious postage black hole... although it hasn't been quite so bad in the last year or so, and if you stick a CN22 customs label on, it almost always gets through :)

Does this customs label isnt mandatory for international shipments?
Occasionally I order something from China and always has this label, but no guarantee to arrive, without tracking number.

It's mandatory when sending from the EU to outside the EU, not sure how it works the other way round but I've found it helps when sending from UK to Italy (even though they're both in the EU)

well making em exempt with the SA being the only country in that region I rarely sent to is a none starter... bit like sending coals to newcastle or icecubes to eskimo's

with regard to china, I had something returned.. took months , but it came back to me.

Looks like I won't remember my trip for some amazing retro-deals, then...

Anyway, I am traveling alone (as it is customary for me) and staying near Victoria Station. Most of the times I will visit historical and cultural places within the Greater London area; I planned a visit to Winchester on the 22nd and to Cambridge on the 23rd - hopefully something special will turn up at the Computer Museum on that date? I would also like to visit Canterbury but I did not arrange a specific date for that yet.

As for the ebay bit, well, I've purchased almost all of my Sinclair hardware through it and everything went fine. One time a boxed 48K I won at an auction on it and coming from the UK was brought at my place by the mail service when I wasn't there, so when I went to the city main post office to reclaim it, I found local employees even had the care to lock the parcel into a secure closet. That was a nice surprise :)

I live about 25 miles away from Canterbury - there's a retro shop in the city centre called Level Up Games.

I've never been in myself so no idea if they have any Speccy stuff at all, but it might be worth dropping in if you're going to Canterbury anyway.

Cheers leespoons, if I am going to Canterbury I'll definitely take a look since it's close to the cathedral, although judging by the photos on their website it seems they mostly hold console stuff.
