New to BluRay

edited May 2014 in Chit chat
Just got a 50" HD TV in my basement and in the next few days my multi region BlueRay player will arrive.

Now, what cannot miss discs should I be getting. Bare in mind that I am not a fan of War films and find Lord of the rings good, but long winded.

The new Robocop was pretty good...I advise you invest in a roll of 100 DVD+Rs, Utorrent and an account on Ilovetorrents/torrentbytes/scenetime.

TBH I don't see a whole lot of difference between watching DVD and Bluray

theres a nice multi film tarantino bluray i noticed on amazon, and the ultimate edition of dawn of the dead (1979) is a goody, has about 4 versions if i remember right? 3 according to the review i just checked, and since yours is multiregion maybe buy the US version as they state theres more extras on the US disc

    tarantino 10 disc - 8 film set

The extra level of detail you can see in Avatar on Blu-Ray compared to the DVD is quite extraordinary - but you have to sit a few inches from the screen to notice. From sat back on a couch there's not much in it.

I would recommend something really arty, and was going to mention some of Miyazaki's finest animations, but by all accounts the colour balance on the Blu-Ray editions is atrocious. Still, at least your box should upscale the DVD editions nicely.

The LEGO Movie should be out in about three weeks time...
    ...which is AWESOME.

I have a blu ray player, it just sits under my HD telly, unloved and unused
and will continue to do so, until Blu Ray discs start making an appearance in charidee shops

Bluray does appear in charadee shops, you just have to be there at the right time to get them when they are put out onto the shop floor.
CEX has lots of them at ?2, ?3, ?4. Got Goonies for ?3 a few months back.

    Mamma Mia,

It's the law if you have a blu ray player you have to have this film, pretty much as owning a VHS copy of ghost was :-D:-D

I love blu ray, but they almost take as long as a spectrum game to load...
  • edited May 2014
aw yeah, turn the bu ray player on, and go and make a cup of tea

then make another one, whilst it plays through all the unskippable content

I had to sit though that in the cinema. Me the wife and one other random were the only ones in the large THX wide screen Cinema. At one point I got up laid on my back and proclaimed that I simply could not take it any more.

That got more laughs from the one random and cinema staff than the whole movie.

I've been reading that some of the >= 2 year old players now have a quickstart feature during which it consumes 2x the power.

It's not billed as a comedy.
Actually that's one film with some impressive scenery in the shots. And hell, great music too. Even if the 'singing' is strictly amateur.

Avatar is a must on Bluray, get the extended Directors Edition, has a fair bit of extra stuff in it and pads out the story even more.

Few others that I bought that are worth it :

    Gladiator
    Shaun of the Dead
    Battle : Los Angeles
    Dredd
Karl Pilkington (Idiot Abroad & Moaning of Life)
    Alien Quadrilogy
Black Rain (Old Michael Douglas film, looks nice on Bluray)
Band of Brothers & The Pacific (I know you said about war stuff, these are must haves)

Blade Runner, The Dark Knight (and sequel), and yes, LOTR are all stunning on bluray. Watching TDK with a pair of stereo headphones on a big screen is an amazing experience.

Well I just got on BlueRay

    For only $7 each
Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
    Pirates of the Caribean 3,
    The Hurt Locker,
    Sixteen Candles,

And then 'The Beatles Help' remastered with 5.1 surround sound as a sweetener for the wife.

BluRay was almost obsolete the day it came out -- if you have a decent internet connection. I think it's been a good 4 or 5 years since I seriously used a non download/non streaming way of watching TV or a film.

I like collecting though, and I like to have a box with artwork and stuff. I'm the same with music...

Yeah, but that's virtually the same argument as CDs being as waste of time because MP3s exist. They're both good and have their place but one is superior to the other quality-wise. It just depends on how discerning you are and whether you just want to watch something once or if you want all the extras and better quality a full Blu-Ray with higher bitrate offers.

I watch a lot of HD content on a media player but still buy the odd Blu-Ray disc every now and then if it's something I'd want to watch again etc. And there are a LOT of people out there who like collecting stuff and owning hard drives full of films just isn't quite the same as having boxed items with artwork etc. People are never going to want to stop collecting physical stuff, even if it does become more niche.

As you said, it also does kinda rely on a decent internet connection and a lot of people still have utterly rubbish speeds. If you can't stream something very well so have to download it first then it's hardly that convenient compared with having a physical disc, is it?

Also (and I know this a fairly minority thing but....) downloading/streaming can't handle 3D properly as the best anyone offers is a SBS version with half the resolution.

And finally, if by "downloading" you mean "unofficial backups I stumbled across on the internet, m'lord" then they're all sourced from BluRay in the first place.

    I rest my case ;)
