If there is an instant death 'mode', i'm your man. I play tested (ok, played) the alpha Bonkers and FK. (thanks to you, and your sister!) so good to see you are catering to the more mature audience as well.
For sure there is an instadeath mode. There will be what is essentially a near perfect (well, as perfect as we can get it) one to one remake gameplay wise. There will be extras, many many extras, but if you want to play Spellbound as David originally wrote it then you can do that.
As David said, there will be a classic mode (instadeath, NPC micro management, possibly limited saves, not decided about that yet) and a modern mode where you can turn any or all of them off (the default will be all so no instadeath in the dark rooms etc, no Thor dying because you didn't feed him, no restrictions on saving, more clues, more hand holding) you can play the game how you want to.
If you have an OUYA then just let me know if you want in on the Beta, it's an open Beta so there will be no restrictions on how many people give it a whirl.

But i will hold out for the Android beta, if that's ok? I'm sure it won't be far behind.....
I like the current visuals. Sure, I kinda also like the idea of a more cartoony look instead - and yeah, perhaps the metallic-like graphics do look a bit generic ...but I like these visuals anyway. They're a great update to a great game.
I challenge anyone who doesn't like this, to select another Spectrum game and remake it in their own preferred style. Then the rest of us can criticise it and you'll find out if you're more right in your opinion than Spraydough. "We" may like your take on a game...or we may not. But Spraydough is actually making something which is more than most.
I always feel that remakes should look like the Spectrum version, just without colour clash.
Narrow minded.
But we're all different.
Personally, as much as I like him, I feel that Caffeinekid's remake of Aquaplane was lazy (sorry Caffy). It may play well, but since you're working with vastly superior hardware and better graphical capabilities...then why not upgrade the graphics - make it look more modern? ...having it look just like the Spectrum game makes it unappealing to me because I might just as well just play the original game on an emulator. I respect Spraydough for making that extra effort to modernize the looks of the game. But as I said above - we're all different and I know you can't please everyone.

and you have the nerve to call somebody narrow minded?
Yours is the most fallacious argument.
One can like Mozart and dislike Wagner.
Can like the art of Turner (JM) but dislike the winner of the Turner Prize.
One does not need to excel the skills of an artist to express a dislike the work of that artist. Nor does one need to excel the skills of an artist to express an opinion on the (lack of) skills of that artist, and to criticize their art. It is fallacious to say otherwise.
The library of spectrum games is full of rubbish. Old and new alike. The fact that most of us could not make anything better is not an argument to say that we cannot criticize until we can make something better.

Thank you Sokurah, and thanks to everyone else who has posted with their views so far, both positive and negative. We are always looking to improve.
From my own point of view, I see very little point remaking (actually, this is probably more of a port than a remake) a game if you aren't going to use the abilities of the target hardware to your advantage. In the case of Spellbound OUYA, we aren't using the full processing power or graphics capabilities of the machine, we are putting the game we want to make onto a platform that would easily support it.

I certainly didn't read Sokurahs reply like that, nor do I believe that was how it was intended.
I read it as "your vision may also be torn to shreds by others" more than "you couldn't do better"
As a coder, it's perfectly natural that my art skills are of such a low quality that just up scaling Magic Knight for a one to one remake would be beyond my ability. I count myself very fortunate that I managed to speak to Saul about graphics when I did. I firmly believe that Sauls vision of the graphics required in the game almost matches exactly my own thoughts.
This really shouldn't be about who is right and who is wrong (although asking for a pixel for pixel remake without colour clash is just plain bonkers) but about whether you like the game or not.
But i will hold out for the Android beta, if that's ok? I'm sure it won't be far behind.....
Although an Android port is not only possible, but actually exists (I do the vast majority of development on my Android phone), an Android version of this game is in no way imminent. I have not spoken to David about it, but there are many things that would need to be changed and the control system would need and awful lot of consideration. At the moment we are concentration solely on an OUYA port.
Do not hold your breath for any mobile Magic Knight unless you hear different from David himself.

Alright, perhaps I started out a bit strongly, but I believe that I did mention that everyone is different and there's room for every style. But to suggest that "all remakes should look like the original"? Utter lunacy. That's silly and just as stupid a statement as me calling someone narrow minded. And I'm sorry, but I do stand by it.
But, dude, relax. I'm not saying that I'm right and everyone else is wrong. Hell, several of my own remakes are pretty close to the original, but I usually always add something new to the mix.
Both Spraydough and David Jones is of the opinion that;
When David wrote the 48k versions of the games originally, he was restricted by hardware.
On the OUYA, we are NOT restricted by hardware, and to suggest that I limit the remake in any way shape of form just because the original was restricted is madness.
Of course I love the Spectrum - otherwise I wouldn't be here, but I don't think there's any reason to limit a remake of a Spectrum game to look exactly like the original game, unless that just happens to be the style you're going for. Like I said - people are different, but why not improve things just a little.
Why are you getting so worked up anyway. When I suggested that someone should do their own game and let the rest of us decide I wasn't saying that "we" would slam it just because I might look like a Spectrum game - only that everyone would have a chance to give their opinion. They might agree that pure Spectrum graphics would work - as it does sometimes...just look at Abbaye Des Morts. And then I'd be wrong. Well, not wrong because I have the capacity to love most styles, but it's always nice to hear what other people think too.
I haven't used any of them but there seem to be a few out there. A Google for 'Windows OUYA emulator' pulls up a few options, but I don't want to reccomend any of them, for obvious reasons.....

It really is shaping up to be a cracking remake.

Great news. I'd love to give this a go, but sadly I don't own an OUYA. Are there any emulators available for Windows?
