+3 Power supply

edited May 2014 in Hardware
Just a quick question:
Can a the +3 power supply be used with a +2A? I always thought it could but one of the Amps is higher. I'm sure this doesn't matter but thought I'd better check before using.
Thanks.

+3 PSU will work fine with a +2A. Bad for the +2A PSU if you do it the other way round though.

Difference is in the +12v line, rated 700mA on a +3 PSU but only 200mA on a +2A PSU.

    Many thanks, that's great.

You can use +2A power supply with +3, if you don't use floppy. divIDE is good example. I think, it is also safe to use, when 3" drive is replaced with modern 3,5" - they use only +5V.

If you mean that the floppy drive's power supply is physically disconnected, then yes :)

Thanks again, i'll use the +3 with the 2A. On a related note, is there a single power supply that can be used on all speccy models 16k to +2?

The grey +2 PSU can be used to power all earlier models too. The 48K models might get slightly hotter than usual when powered this way because the supply's output voltage might be a bit higher because of the light loading, but in most cases it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for that, interesting video. The amount of times I've used a 128 with a 48 power supply! I remember 'back in the day' when I first got my toastrack home, unplugging the rubber key and immediately plugging the 48 power supply into the new 128. Fortunately I now see all I would have done is damage the power supply, or burnt the house down!

I still fail to see why the toaster requires more amps, is it the keypad/rs232?

It needs the extra power to get your bread golden-brown ;)

I'd hazard a guess at the toaster ULA requiring more power, as well as the extra RAM chips.

Amstrad saw fit to slap a heatsink on the +2 Grey 40056 ULA which is essentially the same part as the 7K010E5 in the toaster.
