You realize how much crap I'm going to get from my boss who is a "soccer" fan if the USA get through to the next round...now England isn't...

This will be my last post in this thread, I might start a "stuff that everyone likes that you couldn't give a donkey's left bollock about" though

I think this also sums it up quite nicely...

Are you trying to tell us you're a massive football fan Lee?

Lee always tries to deny it, but suddenly goes missing when the footy is on, or pops up on these footy threads, ;)
    So far, so meh :)

    and this one

    Excellent!

    Hmmm, thats that then.
Yeah Mile, 4 years until more moaning :)

At least the greasey's got a kicking too from the slitghtly-less greasy Costa Ricans.

Can't believe a country with 50million people (UK) can't put together a decent football team when they chuck millions at them?

The FA have invested ?450m on English football over the last 5 years.

Costa Rica have invested only ?2m in five years.

All that money, cant we start bribing people. It's all meant to be corrupt anyway. Or at least turn a blind eye to drug tests.

Why leave it all up to the players.

Unfortunately it's the Premier League, not the FA that are the problem (they're not the same thing). The FA are at least trying to do something about it, hence the massive investment in St George's Park, which will only ultimately lead to a better England team - it's a pity they're twenty years too late with it.

The Premier League only cares about two things - the Premier League, and far more importantly, money. Until the cash cow TV rights stop it's not going to get any better as the FA has no power whatsoever over the PL. I would like to see a cap on the amount of foreign players a team can field in a game, much like the Italians did in the 90's. But the FA has zero power to enforce it. Of course the PL teams are going to invest in foreign talent as it only costs a few million quid. To set up youth academys, which really have to bring along 5 or 6 top quality talented kids into the senior side every 5 years is going to cost a lot, lot more. There's absolutely no guarantee it will work, investing in already proven foreign talent will.

Fortunately some of these fair play rules that are being brought in are likely to have some effect. For all they've spent, in fairness to Man City, they are investing heavily in getting an infrastructure ready to cultivate young talent, exactly like Barcelona and Ajax do. It's a long term thing, and other sides like Liverpool, Everton and West Ham (who have a history until recently of bringing young, exciting talent through) are doing the same. It's going to take time, probably 10 to 15 years, but we're getting there!

I didn't kill this thread with my last post did I, or are all the Englishmen on here just avoiding talking about the WC now that we're out :-(

Some potentially cracking games on today. Spain have got to do some damage limitation, Netherlands and Chile have probably been the two outstanding teams so far, and I believe there's a scenario tonight that could lead to Brazil being knocked out.

I am looking forward to the Netherlands v Chile match, that could turn out to be a cracker. Then again, it could end up a damp squib lol

I'm hoping that Australia give Spain a kicking too, lol

There is only one true Ronaldo, the greatest soccer genius ever.
Naz?rio Ronaldo Lu?s de Lima - "El Fenomeno":

I had the privilege to see him live and such football magic I've never seen, even from Maradona.

Friend of mine is Costa Rican (and currently on an oil rig in the gulf of Mexico)...he just texted me

"sorry for my country knocking you out of the world cup"

    I responded

"we haven't even played you yet"

    He said

"again, sorry for my country knocking you out of the world cup..."

That reminds me of a friend of mine (Liverpool fan) who was in Istanbul in 2005 for the Champions League final against AC Milan. At half time all his Man United and Everton supporting mates flooded him with texts (you can imagine what they said).

After penalties he texted them back...

What did he text them? (As a LFC fan, I can think up some abusive texts I would have sent lol)
