While I am a LFC supporter and think that Suarez is amazing when playing, after yesterday he should be banned and sold immediately. We don't need ****e like that happening, it's absolutely shameful.

Italy is out. Some dubious performances and an even more dubious (in a different sense) referee and that's it.
I doubt Uruguay will go much further if it keeps playing like this, with the likes of Chile, Holland, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium etc. around.
I liked that the Italian goal keeper admitted that they (the Italian team) were also to blame for the poor match. Good human quality to admit such a thing and not just bloat his own ego.
However, I can't help but feel that the referee was overly against Italy. (The referee is Mexican)
Still, for one of the Italian managers to go over to the Uruguain team and threaten with fists is a little rich. We all know Italians have it in their DNA to be overly dramatic.
This was the first time I felt sorry for Italy, they didn't deserve to lose (in my opinion)

Completely disagree, that was worth a yellow card at best. I have seen much worse fouls in other games of the tournament (i.e. ruling out Suarez's bite) which weren't even sanctioned with a free kick.
On the other hand, good to see Prandelli and Abete resign. In a country where politicians would not step down even when convicted with tax fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy etc. that's quite something to behold.
Still a bit pathetic given this is his third offence. He should be outright banned from professional football. At least no-one else has to take the field against him for the rest of this cup.

It's actually 4 months. So it's the rest of the world cup and the first 9 premier league matches.
Also, if any games less than the 9 will be carried over to the next world cup.. So if they went out in the knockout phase there would still be another 7 games that he cannot play in..
It's 4 months in *all* competitions/leagues etc, and the 9 specific games refer to world cup games that Uruguay play.
Unless, the appeal which then makes a mockery of it all, :/

Raising your foot to show spikes and dig them into another players legs should always be a Yellow/red card. Depends on intent and its the ref's call.
As I said earlier, I suspect the ref was against Italy so probably easier for him to dish out a red instead of yellow.

I am not saying that Marchisio should not have been sanctioned. Just that a red card is excessive, especially after having seen much worse in that same match and in other ones, and with the referee just there minding his own business; the latest examples coming from some nasty interventions by Zabaleta or Mascherano on Nigerian players with Rizzoli less than two meters away, ostensibly looking at the clouds up in the sky or god knows what else.

As far as I know, referees should keep an eye on everything that happens nearby the ball. Whenever they can't - they are humans after all - there is support from the assistants, and from all the technological marvels of our enlightened era, which should help reducing such cases to a minimum. Or at least that is how thing are supposed to be :-/
Anyway, if you are able to stretch your neck to such an extent that you can manage to bite the inner part of your shoulder, you probably already found work as a circus attraction by now. :-P
Now that even Russia is out, it seems most of us here won't be following their national team into the second stage - besides the obvious England and Spain, Portugal, Italy and Russia seem to be the most represented nationalities here. There are folks from the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Germany and France here as well, though.
As for the next matches, here are my predictions. Everyone else is encouraged to give their own of course :)
Brazil-Chile: A tough call. Both teams have shown a strong determination and it will surely be a fierce fight. I'd pick Brazil as the winner but it won't be a cakewalk for them.
Colombia-Uruguay: Colombia, definitely. It has proved to be a solid team and Uruguay just does not seem to be able to match them (on a side note, if Italy was there instead, Colombia's victory would have looked even more certain to me - they would have shredded our ramshackle team to pieces).
Netherlands-Mexico: Another hard fight is to be expected here. Although I like both teams I'd expect the Dutch to win, but I think they will prevail by a narrow margin.
Costa Rica-Greece: Greece wrestled victory from the hands of defeat in their match against Ivory Coast. I doubt they will be able to perform such a feat again, especially against a solid opponent like Costa Rica.
France-Nigeria: France is performing remarkably well in this tournament and I believe they are going to win here, although Nigeria is not to be underestimated.
Germany-Algeria: Germany is on paper bound to win here, but especially after what I saw tonight, I think Algeria will not make that an easy victory.
Argentina-Switzerland: Again, Argentina should win this, but not so easily. Switzerland could prove to be a surprise for them.
Belgium-United States: The Red Devils seem to have come back to their golden era of the '80s and I think the US team, although not bad, won't be able to withstand their assault.
Yes, the European sides took a pasting in the first round. It was inevitable that they would, I suppose, as few of them could adapt to the Brazilian conditions. It's interesting that it's predominantly the sides from Northern Europe that made it through, although that's at least partly down to the luck of the draw.

Netherlands vs Mexico should be an exciting game. The Dutch have looked great on the break, with the pace of Robben and Van Persie, but I can't see the Mexicans giving them too much room and they've been pretty handy on the attack themselves.
Greece vs Costa Rica is the token minnows match. CR have played great football so far, I suppose, but how long can they keep it up? They already looked a bit burned out against a second string England in a match that was admittedly pretty close to a dead rubber, but Greece are hardly a strong side and barely scraped through.
Argentina vs Switzerland should be another tasty contest, but for the reasons mentioned above you've got to fancy the Latin American side.
And that just leaves Belgium vs USA. Belgium start favourites, but I think the Americans have a definite chance here too, as they're a tough side to break down and Belgium have won all their games so far with very late goals.
