Funny goings on next door!

edited July 2014 in Chit chat
Had to share this with someone, and you guys topped the list!

My neighbour built an extension on his house some years ago and has rented it out every since as it's basically a self-contained flat (their son was supposed to move in after college, but he's had more sense than to return home)

Anyway, over the years they've had a fair number of short term tenants, and most of them have been quiet and perfectly ok. Access to the flat is round the back of the house, so people have to walk up the side of our drive and let themselves through a side gate to cross over to the back of his property. So we get to see the people coming and going quite often.

A few weeks ago a young girl moved in, Polish or certainly Eastern European, and there's been a lot of guys visiting since then. You know where this is going, but being innocent types we just thought 'oh, she's got a lot of family/friends' and thought no more about it ... until the other evening when we were sitting in the garden and heard a lot of - how shall I put this - grunting and moaning coming from over the fence from her windows.

An enthusiastic boyfriend then, we thought, until he left and another turned up about half an hour later. And then another soon after that! Although she might just be very friendly, I can't imagine this is anything but someone in the sex trade, given the volume of callers we could remember (and we've only seen those coming in when we're outside, god knows how many come at night or other times we're out!).

I'm not sure if my neighbour or his wife knows that his flat now seems to be a knocking shop, although I wouldn't puit it past him to have struck an arrangement with her for payment of rent in kind rather than in cash!

Moral dilemma time though - it's none of my business really, although I don't particularly care for lots of strangers turning up outside my property and blocking the road/drive with badly parked cars - but should I mention something to the neighbour or his wife (assuming they don't know)? Anyone got any suggestions (not involving testing out the services offered!)?

I could turn a blind eye, but I have a feeling the whole thing will end up in a frightful mess at some point so wondering whether to let it ride and watch the car crash or do something a bit more proactive and have a quiet word?

You could always tip off the fuzz.
Also they may be breaking the law with the property anyway. You can build quite a big extension (or less permanent conservatory) nowadays without planning permission, but if it changes the occupancy of the property (which adding an entire flat would do) then in a lot of areas, that's strictly controlled.

Unless their actions are directly impacting you, your family or your property, then my advice would be to let them be.

Intervention, no matter how well intended or implemented often ends badly for the instigator.

I think she'd charge extra for that

My gut feeling was to let alone, but Mrs Amfoot has stronger views based on moral outrage!

I'm in Surrey. Do you want me to pop round there and have a... *ahem*... word? :-D

only do this if you want to start a full scale war with you neighbour!

Grassing someone up to the rozzers is a bit steep! Besides which I dare say she has a few officers coming round at special rates. I can't say I've ever been a pimp but women don't become prostitutes because they enjoy sex with different men regardless of their looks and hygiene. They do it out of desperation to pay for addictions for instance, or indeed the rent.

What would I do? Maybe have a word with the owner to see if they are aware of what is going down... I mean on. But frankly, and your wife has every right to have her own set of morals, it's none of anybody else's business. It is a noise nuisance and we all have to put up with those from time to time. Morals on sexuality and sexual behaviour really shouldn't come into it.

"Grassing someone up", this is an idea installed in us from childhood, when the bully picks on you and you alert the teacher, bully makes you feel even worse by telling you that YOU have done wrong. We live in a society with rules. Someone does something wrong and it affects you, do not hesitate to do the right thing.

In this case and I have zero knowledge of such matters, but isn't one girl working from her home, legally OK? Thinks it's kerb crawling and having several in a house that is not. But I do not know.
I'd mention it to the owner, Mrs S says the same too.

Have a word with her, tell her that kind of behaviour is not acceptable in your neighbourhood.

Shes probably over here scrounging benefits and housing allowance anyway...

Thanks for the thoughts so far

I'm vacillating wildly on the subject (I know, I know, I'll go blind): I'm a bit worried about possible reprisals if I say something and she does get asked to leave, as I know my neighbour will throw me under the bus if the conversation gets nasty and she challenges him as to where he got his info from. I really don't fancy my house covered in paint or fence kicked down!

Is she doing anything wrong - well, probably not as some comments have said.

Is it a nusiance - well it's getting to be in terms of parking, and because of the layout of the fence/gates into their property and mine there is a chance someone could try to get into our garden by mistake (it's happened before with visitors for past tenants) which is not ideal given we've got kids there etc.

    Maybe, maybe not.

I suppose I could ask HMRC to drop by and give her a thorough audit for tax evasion on her earnings though, I doubt she's declaring any!

Theres a specific department for anonymously reporting benefit fraudsters, whereas I don't condone grassing people up for trying to earn a few extra quid on top of their benefits, this woman is clearly becoming a nuisance so it would be understandable if you did the 'dirty' on her!

Why not ask your neighbour about the amount of cars/people...if it's affecting your parking/driveway etc then that's a valid point, don't even have to mention Madame Olga

What kind of neighbour have you got that throws people under buses or vandalises their neighbours property?

Is he the pimp or something?

OK, you have kids, I'm going to assume they are too young to realise what "may" be happening here and wife is not happy.

I would go for "the cars are causing a problem" approach to the landlord. Anything else is not your concern at the moment.

I'm thinking more the displaced tenant being aggrieved and causing damage, not my neighbour.

Like the suggestion of mentioning the cars to him, though it's a busy road so he'd probably suggest it could be anyone of the houses around having visitors. Still, worth a go.

I doubt the mods would let me post any photos here...!!

To be fair, she's not a bad looking lass so I'm sure she'll be busy for as long as she's there! Not your classic looker - more striking than pretty - but not quite falling into the description a mate of mine was prone to use:

However, as a married man I am above such temptations

Discreetly get a quote for the going rate, then make up your own A5 flyer for the service and pay some other benefits-dodger 2p each to shove them through all the neighbourhood letterboxes. A problem shared...

That's a bit unfair! Sounds like she's working hard to me. Trouble is they offer these jobs to British workers but they're to lazy. Most of them wouldn't get out of bed for the amount I imagine she is being paid.

I've worked alongside people from Poland many times and found them to be exceedingly hard-working. In fact we had to tell one guy off for working through his lunch-hour, he was making us look bad! Their Polish culture is all about working for your money and a couple of comments on this thread have come straight out of the Daily Mail Book of Facts :)

Still, sweeping generalizations aside, I hope all can be resolved peacefully.

Exactly what do you think she puts on her tax return then? As I doubt the punters are calculating the necessary deductions and national insurance contributions each time.

Anyway, I'm sure there's a crap games compo entry here where you have to set the cat loose or turn a hose on the prospective punters making their way between the fences.
