Deus Ex Machina name

I've just learnt that google translate has a pronounce option when you click the speaker (Ta Ralf!).

Erm, I wasn't the only one pronouncing Deus Ex Machina with a soft 'ch' was I?

    If you listen to the audio section then you can hear Ian Dury say it.

    I don't know how Croucher and Dury pronounced it, but Merriam-Webster gives both DAY-uss eks MAH-ki-nuh (which I have always used and is closest to the Latin) and DAY-uss eks muh-SHEEN-uh (which just sounds wrong to me).

    hehe, not just you, I used to pronounce it as it is read in spanish, 'machina' (or machine-ah in english! ). I think nobody used to pronounce it in the correct, latin way!

    +1 for the me too crew, and I think we all did back in the day at school if/when we talked about it as I don't ever recall being corrected, I'm also pretty sure that it came up at least once or twice when we'd be around someone's house playing games and reading Crash/Zzap/Sinclair User/C&VG while games were loading or waiting on turns.

    In fact I think only started pronouncing Deus "Day-us" after listening to the (excellent) Belgian band of the same name. Before that I would've pronounced it "Juice!"

    Ah Deus! I used to love suds n soda! Wasn't there a Glaswegian in the band too?

    As for Deus Ex Machina it's obviously pronounced Ston-kers!

    I think if I used the phrase Deus Ex Machina (correctly pronounced) in the school playground I would have been called a gayboy, given a boggie* and had my rucksac nicked!

    Now though, I'm poised and waiting for an opportunity to use it in conversation :grin:

    Machine-ah for me. You can keep your foreign Latin rubbish ;)

    In a similar vein, I couldn't understand why a bloke at work kept going on about a PC game called 'Day Of Sex', thinking it was probably something he should keep to himself.

    Obviously, he was saying 'Deus Ex', but I was hearing (an accented) 'Day Ah Sex'

    Note that the English pronunciation of any word is sometimes off using Google Translate. Don't ever rely on it to be correct all the time.

    I studied Latin at high school, and the correct pronounciation is "DAY-uss eks MAH-ki-nuh".
