Yeah he's brown now. Google says he died and got replaced by another dog. Not really sure why. I though it was voiced by the same guy as Peter.

Ah. Seemed like too much of a popular character to get rid of. ;-)

There was an episode on a few days ago on BBC3, I think it was last Wed or Thurs.

I won't spoil it but it involved Stewie deciding to destroy his time machine.

Do not read unless you want to spoil it:
    Spoiler:

The episodes seem a bit mixed up as last night iirc there was some 'old' ones on though with Brian.

Like Lee says, it's a joke. Before the season was first broadcast, news 'leaked' that they'd be killing off a major character (as cartoon series occasionally do, especially when they're looking for publicity or to add a fresh new angle to the show), then rumours started about which character it would be. I don't know if they officially confirmed before the season started that it would be Brian, but it was Brian they killed off.

... for about three episodes. Then they bring him back, which in most series (cartoon or otherwise) would be a cheap and nasty trick, but in Family Guy does tie in with their sense of humour!

I remember a big one being when they killed off Maud Flanders in The Simpsons. It had been declining for about four seasons anyway, but it was at that point I believe The Simpsons became unwatchably ****e.
