always had a soft spot for tarantino but couldn't get into django unchained. Jamie foxxxxx (or however he spells it) is awful imo, went on far too long as well.

not seen 12 years a slave, but I'm guessing it's totally different
tch Djangos brilliant and 12 years a slave seems to go on forever too :P but brilliant

  • Another vote for Shutter Island.

I've never understood the love for Tarantino. I think his films are sh*t!

Another few that should be seen I think...

    Made in Britain.
    Scum.
    This is England.
    Quadrophenia.
    The Long Good Friday.
    Small faces.
    My name is Joe.
    Cal.
    Excalibur.

...and moving away from the British isles...

    Nikita.
    Delicatessen.
    Run Lola Run.
    Das Experiment.
    Martyrs.
    Rock n' Roll Cop.
Bun Man aka. The Eight Immortals Restaurant (if anything just to laugh at the scene where he kills a woman by ramming a fistful of chopsticks up her minge ).
Old Boy (not the Spike Lee remake).
    La Haine.
    The Kite Runner.
    Scarface.

Sod it can't think of any more that aren't completely ridiculous

    Delicatessen.

seen this a few times, but not since about 1995. remember it being off the wall in a good way. not usually a fan of French films

Here's a few more I just thought of...

    Bunraku.
    A Scanner Darkly.
    Thursday.
    Memento.
Kids (This is an awful awful movie, but it should be experienced at least once).
Akira (Cinematic and subtitled is the only way to go, the English dub version is terrible and has the story and names of the characters all messed up, and about 35 minutes of footage missing from it).

Most of John Carpenter's films are quite entertaining:

    Dark Star,
    The Thing,
Escape from New York and Escape From LA.
    They Live.

They Live I especially liked. :)
  • If you want something really odd check out Gozu (Takashi Miike).

    Very surreal. Very good :)

I remember watching a film called One Day Removals a few years back.

Filmed in and around Aberdeen. If you can handle the heavy Doric accent that happens in parts, then it's a cracking little film.

I have that on DVD and have watched a couple of times but feel I need a shower once it's finished. It's nasty!

I didn't know Army of Darkness was part of a trilogy... really!

A very interesting and cool film, anyway! (ok, ok, and not that OBSCURE! :D)

Army of darkness was evil dead 3? Evil dead 2 is the best one.

I'd recommend The Player with Tim Robbins, great movie. The Graduate very good too.

I'll leave these here, totally random:
    The Lives of Others
    The Pianist
    Parked
    District 9
    American History X
    Falling Down
... I'll stop ... there's just too many, torot will never get around to watch even half of all those movies we're throwing at him

Oh, and if you want some rather unusual and bleak movies try something like those (I only mention them as I've seen them recently):
    Gummo
    Combat Shock

Here's 4 of my recommendations, based on what you said you might like and in the form of trailers so you can judge for yourself if you'd be interested! :)

    Anyone mentioned 'Threads' yet?

A somewhat disturbing movie about WW3.

It freaked me out as a child!

Yeah i have that on dvd and it's still quite disturbing.
Another interesting movie which is quite obscure is called 'The Quiet Earth' made in New Zealand in the eighties, its a kind of sci-fi movie but doesn't have lasers and spaceships. It also had a very interesting end.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • I love Ben Wheatley's stuff :)

I think Down Terrace and A Field in England are worth a go too.

I had to do an essay on this film for my media studies A-Level. I love a lot of Coen Bros stuff but didn't really enjoy this one tbh (typical, as I had to watch it about 5 times!)

as far as other Coen Bros films, Fargo, Big Lebowski and Raizing Arizona are great
  • Swimming with Sharks (Kevin Spacey at his acerbic, sarcastic best). It doesn't seem to get talked about that often but it's a brilliant black comedy/drama with excellent dialogue and well-paced 'how did we get to this?" plot.

If we're doing WWIII then Dr Stranglelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a classic!
