What were the most addictive games?

edited March 2006 in Games
You dont seem to experience the same level of addiction with modern day games like you did with Spectrum games, or maybe that was just because it was somehow easier to be 'addicted' to games when you were a kid. Not sure.

For me, Arkanoid Revenge of Doh was probably the most addictive game Ive ever played. As soon as that game went on.....that was it.

Even my old man used to play that one. I used to laugh my head off when he lost his ball; he'd really lose his temper (in an amusing way of course).

Addictive games seem to be the ones that have high scores to attain especially when theres a few of you round playing , i used to play trans am , jetpac , planetoids , defender , zynaps a lot for high scores.

But saying that ! i was hooked on management style games such as the boss , smuggler , striker , footballer of the year , etc

I also played jsw , skool daze and monty mole to death when they first came out so i guess its just the game thats addictive , not the style . ill stop rambling on now.

I lost many hours to Chaos many moons ago! Also Feud and Rock N'Wrestle were almost always loaded into my Speccy.

Arrgh, now you reminded me! I hated this game. My mom and sister were both addicted to it and then I couldn't use my beloved speccy when the two started to chase the freaking ball around. :D j/k

To go back to "serious mode", I was totally hooked on CRL's Formula one(and still am). Then lots of others too, like Nodes Of Yesod, Robin of the Wood, Rambo 2, Lords Of Chaos... eh far too many to list them all :)

World Championship Boxing Manager. So engrossing. Hours spent climbing the ranks from 100 to 1, then defending the world title, then taking on new boxers. I couldn't turn it off.

There were addictive games "when I were a lad" and there's addictive games now. If I plan a gaming session on one of my current favourites (San Andreas, Dino Crisis 3, Burnout 3, etc) I set aside a good couple of hours because I know how hard it'll be to get away from the "one more go" factor.

However I felt the same about games like Target Renegade, Chaos, racing games on the Speccy.

    Socialy concerning games of violence....

Deathwish III. A bad day falls away after machine gunning grannies against the wall. Not part of the game design of course, but jussst something thaaaat was there due to the demographics of the population being acuratley represented!!

    Narc from Ocean..
Ohhhh!!!!! what happened there, BbbbbOOoooooOOOOOMmMMMMm and limbs flying everywhere in Spectrum pixel o vision... Not violent, but impressive sprite design and animation not seen like this before as who expects a sprite you assemble... eerrrrr to need dismantling on screen in such a fashion... purley a demo of design and fun that was released.....

    Cobra
Laser sighted machine gunning the enememy and little babies in pramps with magnificently dressed ladies in dresses... with Rocket launchers was a game device for achieving the effect of mushroom consumption in a non hippy based society.... where we ned to know the muse of Mooohhhahahaha!!!

I do agree with you regarding current games, theres only a very few games the last few years i've played a lot and tried to complete, eg Half Life II.

On the Speccy i think a lot of it as well was that i used to save up for weeks to get a new game so once i got it, even if i wasnt as keen on it as i thought i would play it tons as it took me so long to save up for it !

Some of the most addictive games to me...

Match Day II - Still play this in league mode
Footballer of the Year - Play this tons still
    Headcoach - Crashed after Season 100 !
Commmando/Bombjack - Just couldnt get bored of these classics
  • Renegade , I got addicted to that one recently.

I was always addicted to Laser Squad.
(I'm world champion dont ya know!-unofficial)

I would say CRL's Formula One or World Championship Boxing Manager me and my mates loved playing that for hours on end.

Tetris without a doubt. I played it so often that every time I looked at a blank piece of wall I kept seeing falling shapes in front of my eyes filling up the empty space. I found Fuxoft's Tetris 2 to be ridiculously addictive as well (one of the most highly underrated and little known Speccy games IMO).

Only tried? HL2 just takes perseverance, especially on the normal skill level.

I remember a PC version of a 3D Tetris with a top/down view (like looking into a barrel/box) ... does anyone here remember the name of that one as I would like to get my Tetris addiction into full gear again.

The most addictive game I've ever played on the Spectrum is Macadam Bumper, a pinball simulation. The ball physics seem odd at first, but once you get used to it, you find that the table is perfectly balanced. When you are able to master it to the level of averaging 60-70000 points a game, it's hard to press the reset button to quit - it's gaming heroin.
