Zx Spectrum Football Management

edited October 2014 in Games
Hi,

Has anyone played any football manager games from World Of Spectrum?

What ones have you played and what do you think of them?

I'm still playing Footmall Manager - nothing better than a simple non over inflated management game :)

I quite like The Boss by Peaksoft, another simple but fun game
  • Football Manager 1 & 2 are my faves.

I recommend Tracksuit Manager and The Double
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

I'm down with that. I'd also recommend Kenny Daglish as it also has highlights.

Does anyone know of any other games which feature highlights.

The Double was a great game - and I managed to get there. Did tend to help which team you started with (Gillingham was a good one to get) and there did seem to be an emphasis on crowd control for some reason!

Tracksuit Manager was good if you like verbose descriptions of the action - but personally I preferred the action shots of Football Manager!

Virgin's FA Cup and Brian Clough's Football fortunes were good fun for multiplayer.

Agreed, FM and FM2 are the best but....

If you want an almost impossible task, try
league Challenge by Atlantis (it has highlights)
    Its difficult.

Football manager world cup was crud and FM3? Well. How do you go
So far down hill from FM2
    Anyone getting K.Toms new one?
  • Kevin Toms wasn't involved in FM3 explaining its craptitude.
Match of the Day had hilights. It also had Jimmy Hill.
  • The ones I've probably played (and enjoyed) the most are:

    Football Manager
    Tracksuit Manager
    The Double
    Football Director
    Football Director II
    On the Bench
    Football Champions
    Cheeky Funster (53)

Dundee's European Challenge does, the game itself is a bit thin on the ground tho

I would say over half of all the time I played on the Spectrum was taken up by management games. I was addicted to them.

I preferred the more sedate, text heavy ones...I found the more fancy the game tried to be the less engaging it was.

Started with The Boss which I believe was originally a 1984 release, I personally played Soccer Boss which was a re-release and had extra features.

Then went on to On The Bench by Cult Games who specialised in these kind of games. It had better gaming mechanics but did lack the charm of Soccer Boss which had a weekly update that was, albeit pre-determined, more of a random challenge as the weeks went by.

People will ALWAYS remember no7 breaking a leg after the first game SCOOBY BREAKS A LEG! so I would put an inferior player in his palce for the first game.

I have always wondered exactly how much of the input players put in made a difference on results and how much was randomised.

thing is 8 bit wise, that was "end of days" for 8 bit. A friend at the time did the c64 version, was dragged away from system 3 (he was doing fuzzball) to do it , or prism were gonna sue for breach of contract. so prism were trying to make some money from the license they bought off Kevin I guess.

the guy who did make the c64 one, can't see his heart was in it as it wasn't even an action game.. just paid the bills.

2 of my friends who played these sims a lot also stated tracksuit manager / double were the best of em.

but there were loads of budget ones by cult etc ? so there must have been a market for the games, that simple :)

Soccer Boss was probably the first management game I played. really good game, but spoiled by the way it would randomly sell players for you, so suddenly you'd be without a player you didn't want to get rid of

That's the part of Soccer Boss i hated, you would end up with your star striker being sold and your performance would sometimes suffer as a result. Still, it was a pretty good football management game.

perhaps some clever wosser can hack into the game and remove that bit!
  • Try saving a snapshot before a match. Now reload and change your team around. You'll still get exactly the same score!

I remember the ads for D+H sprts sims. Thet usually came with a list of all the 'features' as though they were real highlights - even mundane stuff like 'match results' - well d'uh, I think that getting football results would be pretty integral to a football management game!

One of the features of Football Director was "Gate Receipts"!

League Challenge was always one of my favourites, but as you say, it was very hard. I managed to get promotions with a lot of effort but never managed to get to the top flight.

can't remember which one it was but:

    "injuries!"

    yep, can't wait...

I don't think i ever managed to win a single match, i might have got a draw but that was it!
It's too hard to get anywhere.

Football Director 48k and On The Bench for me, and also United by CCS. The original Football Manager always looked like a magazine type-in to me and couldn't hold my attention. An obscure one that is also worth a mention is Superleague by Cross Software. It was an indie release that managed to get sold in the Virgin Megastore in Oxford Street. Again, it pooped all over Kevin Toms. Well worth a re-run from the archive.
  • Most of the budget ones were crap but I used to enjoy World Soccer League.
The funny thing is, most of these games were written by the same people!
  • One of the features of Football Director was "Gate Receipts"!
One of my faves from On the Bench is when after the game you get gate receipts, sponsors pay etc and then.....

    Tea profit: ?74

Tracksuit Manager is quite good, instead of watching highlights with matchstick men you get a blow by blow account in text, it's very intriguing, Goliath did the same with their Boxing Manager game (which you should also check out).

  • I've never had the urge to manage a tracksuit.

You should try Primark Jogging Bottom Simulator. You can change the screen colours but only to Black, Gray or Navy.

Doesn't sound very good. It doesn't have the words Advanced or Professional in the title!
