Jury service

Just had a citation from the High Court in Glasgow, i've been picked for bloody jury duty (on my bloody day off work as well!). I'm quite wary because i've never even been in a court before. I have no idea where to go or what to do.
As it's the High Court i hope it's not some murder trial that could drag on, but it is Glasgow after all!
Has any other wossers done jury duty?

Yeah I've done Jury service - and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

It's great to see how justice is served and just how things happen, always been an interest of mine.

If you have to do a murder case or something bad like that you can try and get yourself excused from the case - so long as you do it before the case starts of course - they don't actually want to make you ill after all ;)

Trust me, you won't hate it, and there's nothing whatsoever to be worried about, just go do it
    Oh bugger!<br>

I did it a few years back, and was very apprehensive. But once I had done it, I wanted more. I would love to do it all the time, it was so interesting and thought provoking. Didn't get any major crimes, and it was a real mixed bag. Really exciting to see how things work. You'll enjoy it.

Hope you don't get a long case though (e.g. murder), as they have to request (if you have a job) from your employer the extra time needed for long cases. In some instances that can amount to a few months or longer.

Oh how I wish I could do that :-)

I missed a major multi-murder trial (lasted 9 months+) by a few minutes! Was picked for the case just before it!

    crimes against pizza ? ;)

I got offered it once, but they then said "forget it".. was old bailey in London as well = high end things, not some low rent theft of pick n mix etc. thing is they can ask you so many times, they asked me.. then declined it = 1 less time they can ask and you can defer it also.

obviously claim everything you can for it, if you do go for it to make sure YOU aren't out of pocket. tricky for self employed people etc. also as a friend deferred his stating it would bankrupt his business being away.

a family member did it and they put him up in a hotel for the night for his case.

if you have an interest in crime (not part taking) and the process of stuff, then you might find it interesting. I'd do it and get it out of the way tbh.

Got called up three times back in the late eighties/early nineties. The first case was GBH and the second, a burglary. This case was hilarious though because the guy was adamant he was innocent despite concrete DNA, fingerprints, CCTV evidence.

However, when I got called up a third time to find out it was some major fraud case that could last a good few weeks, I had to stand before the judge and make my excuses that I work (at the time) for a small company and my absence would have a detrimental effect as well as lost of earnings. This was reason enough to be excused.

I didn't mind jury service that much. My only complaint was that the courts where I was (Southwark in London) were bleeding uncomfortable with little leg room (I'm over 6ft tall) and cramp set which in turn aggravated my arthritis. I'd do it again despite that though. :D

Pretty much sums up my feelings, I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get picked for a second case, some conman with about 70 charges against him as I recall.

I dunno about back home, but here in the states you can get nicked for not showing up, they hold you in contempt.

I've only been requested once, literally 5 minutes after my greencard arrived, my wife called them up and told them I wasn't a US citizen.

Needless to say they said Oh fine tear up the letter......and I haven't been bothered by them since.

Which is good because I don't want to do that, I find the justice system a bit of a joke and want no part of it no matter what part of the world I'm in.

Had a dream last night that the person in the dock was chasing me through the court, he managed to corner me and started hitting me, luckily i woke up at that point:grin:

In all fairness, I was a bit late...

I refused to do mine by letter and must have sounded like a ranting nut-case. This was a good few years back mind. Never heard anything. I fully believe that I merely slipped through the system, because if someone wanted to make my life a misery over it they probably would have chased me. **** the lot of them.

When you go to court tell them this dream. Ask them for extra police protection, as your dreams often come true.

They will send you home, and tell you never to come back. ;)

This time next week i'll have done my first session of jury duty. Obviously i can't talk about the case but i'll let you know how i get on, feeling a bit nervous when i think about it because i'm a really shy, quiet person (honest!).

  • I've not been called up for Jury Service (yet!).

About 10 years ago a guy I worked with got quite a juicy case and was off work for a few weeks. It was pretty annoying as he used to give me a lift to 5 a-side footie every Thursday on work lunchtimes.

To be honest, I don't think you could kill that pizza with poison. It would take Godzilla or Mothra to take that bad boy down

Just means the case was put back for whatever reason, they may want you for another one.
