The Manager by GTi was the first one I had, really enjoyable at the time. Sparkes in goal, Maskell and Barnett banging the goals in up front. The regimented use of colour alterations sticks in my mind. I've always loved football management games though, they're pretty much the only current titles I ever play nowadays.
It was a great mix of stats but had a strange colour palette that made it quite exotic and attractive to play. My memory of it was the gamble of training hard but risking injury.
They also released a game about being a football chairman, that focused more on buying shares in clubs.
I liked that, it took away the shackles of the normal gamepley of football management games that were driven by simply picking a player in your squad that had a higher rating than another.
Football Director was hard, but had a great balance of everything I like in a management game.
You're all welcome to play Football Manager Revisited that I've been releasing for the last 3 years, which are enhanced versions of the original Football Manager. They're available here: http://fm1982-revisited.yolasite.com/

Nice, Leicester in the Prem, which saves giving ?50 to EA ;)
Still, quite surprised to see the City line-up includes, ummm, Welbeck, Defoe, Rooney, Hart in goal and... err... Kenny Sansom in defence?
Gave me a chuckle that, after I recovered from the shock at a complete lack of Ulloa, Vardy, Morgan and Schmeichel
Just to explain Simon, if you remember the original Football Manager, it just contained some of the England squad of 24 players from 1982, whichever club you chose. I've doubled that to 48 players by keeping the original 24 and adding the current England squad. There isn't the memory space to have a separate squad for each club! So it sort of spans the generations...
The original Football Manager 1982 England squad is there whichever country you pick in the game, but each country has its own additional 24 players from their current national squads (eg Messi for Argentina).
Note also that there is an option to change team and player names if you wish. So you could put the real Leicester players in, or you and your mates for that matter!
