Super Seymour Saves The Planet

edited October 2014 in Games
What did you all think of this game? I was pretty disappointed with it when I bought it originally and I've just reviewed it for Retro Asylum ( http://youtu.be/-zZTuDAOgNw ) and it just doesn't compare to Bomb Jack in terms of playability.

I notice the mags all gave it universally high and similar reviews.

Also of note is that the backgrounds in the screenshots in all three magazines are different from the screenshots in the map on WOS, and indeed differ from each other. Could it be that all the mags reviewed pre-release versions. Sinclair User actually has the whole boat missing from one of the backdrops!

This is a game that after playing it and practising for a little while gets quite entertaining. The graphics are also quite good, besides the problem that sometimes things get mixed with the background, but the quality of the sprites is really nice. It is a slow-paced Bombjack, with a little resemblence, but in fact, a different game and experience. It could be a hybrid between Mario Bros. and Bomb Jack, entertaining, challenging and well presented ;)
    I would give it a 7-7,5/10.

Yeah the sprites are nice. I've just had a quick go of Stuntman Seymour and the sprites in that are horrible.

I only played it through emulation - like all Seymour games - and quite liked it. A fun variation on the well-known Bomb Jack formula. 8/10 I'd say, also taking into account it's a budget game (for full price it would have been rather "thin").

Love it on the C64, not tried the Speccy version...

I can imagine that it works better on other formats.

Possibly, but it could just be down to the 48k version having different backgrounds compared to the 128k version. Actually, in my extensive testing (all of 2 minutes) I think the 48k one just has the same screen over and over but with different colours depending on which level you're on.

Aye Super Seymour ain't a bad little game.

I didn't like the Seymour adventure games as much as the first 4 Dizzy games, but I liked the Seymour spin off titles more than the Dizzy spin off titles.

I loved it. Better than BombJack me thinks. RobotCop was excellent too.

You actually made me feeling intrigued how this game would look without the background. I'm working on a hack right now :)

And this game seems to have some more mysteries. Sometimes when you move Seymour there is a colour clash on the Platforms. Why??? Was Seymour originally supposed to have his own colour?

And these early screenshots without any background, hmm interesting ;)

I'm guessing that the sprite was originally white and they changed it last minute.

I was right! This game has mysteries.

There is colour painting routine for Seymour in the code, deeply buried and disabled.

Try to make Seymour white :)

For today I'm over but I'll research this game more.

You seem to have a sixth sense for this kind of thing.

It's not as good as Seymour Robotcop but the game is much better than I first gave it credit for, though a backgroundless hack would be nice. Careful you don't post the link on here though ;-)

Never played it to be honest. Looks rather messy and slow to play. Perhaps in 1991, when the Spectrum was starting to fade in terms of quality software releases, the magazines may not have wanted to pan a new title by one of the big software houses still supporting the platform.

Okay, I'm ready with some hack.

For people who like to have it clear and simple :)

    POKE 26218,58 - remove background
POKE 26227,4 - background to black
POKE 60998,3 - background behind items to black
POKE 61923,1 - enable Seymour color

Works with game loaded in 48kB mode, I'll deal with 128kB mode later.

Some comparison (left original, right hack) and animation:

    34njdpg.gif

By the way, it seems that Seymour in early version was supposed to be yellow. There is yellow attribute in proper memory cell which gets overwritten when game starts in final version. So I left him yellow.

good work ralf. the original screen looks even more ridiculous now. Maybe the programmer was colourblind?

For game loaded in 128kB mode one poke is different:

    128 kB

    POKE 26201,58 - remove background
POKE 26227,4 - background to black
POKE 60998,3 - background behind items to black
POKE 61923,1 - enable Seymour color
