games that you liked then but not now

E.g.
Action Biker

As a 10 year old it felt cool to ride around a town and go in the houses. But now it wouldn't be enjoyable.

Know what you mean. Felt exciting at the time. Still OK for a 2 minute blast but you still get bored.

Hard Drivin' is another one. Technically impressive at the time, utter rubbish today.

Quite a few games for me, possibly due to the passage of time. Games that seem to be simply hard work now include: Chiller, Ghost Hunter, Blade Warrior, Captain Blood, Platoon, even Paperboy 2 seemed tedious nowadays.

Many games that were arcade conversions; back then it was the only way to play them for 51 weeks of the year, now with MAME it's pointless. So games like G'n'G, Paperboy and Space Harrier whilst still being good games I will just play via MAME. Having said that stuff like Hypersports, Green Bert and Commando are as good (if not better) than the arcade version (usually down to a fairer dificulty level) so I still enjoy those.

Tbh though the games I usually play on Speccy are those that can't be played elsewhere (or at least aren't bettered elsewhere). So The Wild Bunch, Atic Atac, Cyclone, Mugsy, Yes PM and text adventures - stuff like that.

    cronos

A shooter where the enemies came in from the sides of the screens and the different levels had different ships. I used to just like looking at moving spaceships!

I used to think Frankie Goes to Hollywood was better than it is (still not bad I guess)

Aliens was impressive to me because of the graphics, but not anymore.

On the run is pretty tedious. The same goes for Feud.

Feud is great! It really is, Granted it's far better on the Amstrad but it's still quite good on the Speccy.

I reviewed it a while back. Speccy and CPC versions are the ones to play. The C64 and Atari versions are broken. The 16 bit versions have stuff missing.

I somehow managed to complete Feud on my first go, that's how easy it seemed. I'm almost feart to go back to it in case I've lost my mad skillz, but I remember enjoying it at the time.

I remember being impressed by my mate's big brother's game, Beach Buggy Simulator. I played it recently and yeah it's terrible.

Not even a two-player Ghost Hunters? I'll admit it's a fairly hard game, but I enjoyed it on the same level as Super Robin Hood.

Every game has remained playable for me, but maybe it's because I've never stopped playing them.

"Robin of the Wood". It was wonderful experience in 1988, game had mystical and magic mood.

Today it's annoying game where you can easy get lost even with a map!

I still play the Speccy versions of Paperboy and Bomb Jack sometimes when I want my nostalgia fix. GnG though - much as I think it's a great game I'd much rather play the original.

I did like Feud back in the day, and it was great value for money too.
But, I played it again recently and the 'magic' ;-) was definitely gone.

    Manic Miner. Yes.

I spent hours on that game. But the game was pretty much The Central Cavern, it was so hard right at the start. Once through this, the following screens are easy up until Eugene's Lair when the difficulty rockets up again. And then once you lose your lives, its back to The Central cavern. 90% of my time playing the game was on the first screen, just on the vague hope and promise that I might make it past Eugene's Lair. Its just cruel to the player.

The issue with MM is that it is a very very easy game, with a flawed gameplay mechanism (albiet a mechanism that was in most early games)

As you say, you get to a certain level, die trying to work out how to get past it, then are sent back to the start.

Of course, this makes a small game last a long time (if you have the patience to get through it).

Back in the day, I never got close to finishing it because it became tedious to get to a new screen, try to work out the route, and then have to go back to the start.

A few years ago, I tried it with snapshots and finished it in about ten minutes. A few screens were tricky, and maybe required 4 or 5 attempts; but once you get through the game a couple of times, you can then do it very easily on one life.

Heresy here - I never really liked it that much. Even at the time, it seemed dull to me (which I probably why I never persevered with it) I just didn't appreciate Smith's aesthetic in regard to game design and graphic design. I got my spectrum at Christmas 83, and the Ultimate games, especially Atic Atak, just seemed so much more fun (exploring a huge castle and picking up things and using them rather than trying to get past a single screen for example). Jet Set Willy - same thing, loaded it up, played for a few minutes and never bothered again.

I think i made it to the third screen - just once.

Well yeah, I used to get fireballs, get lighting then go after leonoric. But, I found it dull wandering around the village and countryside trying to find the herbs.

Even wandering around the huts, fences etc thirty years ago seemed quite cool, but now I can't be bothered. I prefer to stick to my old memories of it!

    Codename Matt 1 & 2:

Loved playing it as a kid. Nowadays it's as boring as hell... fly around space, shoot some things... shoot some more things... shoot some more things.... shoot some more things.... Game over. Repeat. Yawn.
