Mig 29. It was the first game I ever bought with my pocket money, and it turned out to be a poor Afterburner/Space Harrier clone. I completed it on my first attempt.
For me it was a toss up between Red Arrows as it was with my pocket money that I'd saved up and it was too difficult and frustrating.
Or asking for Star Wars for my birthday, which I found hidden at least a week beforehand; building the anticipation, only to discover it was identical to 3D Starstrike (which was better slightly imho) which I already had!
Would have said Bubbler by Ultimate, but seems it turned out to be quite an investment.
Purple Saturn Day was rubbish in my eyes, complete disappointment, but probably the worst purchase was Crash Collection Vol 1, bought it purely for Bionic Commando and the 128K music Crash raved about, but only the 48K version was on it, not a happy bunny!
Anirog Flight Path 737. I knew I shouldn't have bought it when the tape cover showed a 3 engined jet that was definitely NOT a Boeing 737 (which is a 2 engine jet, with the engines under the wings - the tape cover art showed something resembling a Trident or B727). Turned out to be a full price game written in BASIC whose only redeeming feature was a piece of 2 channel beeper music in the game menu.
Ah yes, Anirog's "classic" is one of the worst games of all time. I remember Crash magazine awarded it an overall score of 4%.

I'm kind of surprised you didn't know that they were the same.

Only bought because it was in WHSmiths and the first game I had ever seen for sale in there.
At least no-one mentioned World Cup Carnival...

As you say, nice beeper tune though.

I've never played Elite...
Delayed for eternity, then it was a 2 player only
They probably took a few months to get decent A.I. , realised it was impossible and just released it without any :)
