I drink a bottle of water about an hour before bed, normally so I have time to go to the bog before I lay down, and in the hope that I won't wake up needing to go. Nothing worse than having to get up for a piss after you've been drunk a few hours beforehand.
Usually keep a bottle next to the bed as well so that if I do wake up I can have a quick swig of it before I go back to sleep.
I find this doesn't really get rid of it, but it certainly lowers the severity of it.
I'm so used to being slightly hungover when I wake up (sometimes even if I don't drink), that I just muscle through it now, I'm usually fine within a few hours, so long as I didn't go completely overboard.
Once I'm up though I continue to drink nothing but water for a few hours, coffee and/or pop will just make it worse.
If you really must take a pain reliever (I assume for the headache) then stay away from aspirin and go for something containing Ibuprofen. Due to the way it is metabolized it is easier on the liver, which after a lot of drinking is already under enough stress. Then again so are the kidneys, but at least we have two of those. :p
Don't really get them unless I have a stupid amount of booze or mix. Generally just suffer in silence for a few hours then eat some fatty crap once the appetites back.
It seems hangover is the result of the sudden drop of alcohol level in blood, not because of alcohol itself. So it is said that if you drink a little cup of beer of wine before going to bed, the drop won't be so fast and you'll avoid the hangover... but I don't think anyone wants to drink more after a long revelry!
So the only way to avoid a hangover is, as some people said above, not drinking much...
I just quit drinking at all 6 years ago... No problem since that time with hangover, I swear!
When I was young, we drinked cucumber brine from mother's winter preservations... Worked just fine, 1 cup of rassol and world stop turning around and your stomach is ok once again.
In Russian cuisine the leftover brine (culinary brine is called rassol (Рассол) in Russian) has a number of culinary uses, e.g., for shchi, rassolnik, solyanka. Rassol, especially cucumber rassol, or sauerkraut rassol, is also a favorite traditional remedy against morning hangover.
An hangover is simply dehydration. Your body is in pain as it hasn't the fluids required. The quickest and easiest way to combat an hangover when you get one is to drink as much fluids as you can (preferably water) and it will soon go.

It's not as simple as that, but dehydration certainly plays a big part.

It never ocurred to me that there would be a difference.
How about Paracetamol - it that better or worse than either of those two?
used to get hangovers that made me shake all over for hours and feel properly traumatized for the whole day or even 2-3 days after, part of the reason I quit drinking tbh. never once got a headache though, weirdly
This... Very important. Mentioned it in a previous post in this same thread. Taking anything that is metabolized on the liver after drinking alcohol is a real risk. Again, if you really, but really must take something for pain, take an NSAID such as ibuprofen.
depends what it is you are drinking e.g. the volume of beer in liquid vs the strength of spirit or wine.
the old thing of drinking a pint of milk to line the stomach, pre drinking. Not tried it though. Although years ago , I got really tipsy on 2 pints of stella due to not eating , then had the raving munchies.
I am having some hot cognac at the moment , to try to get rid of a cold. JD isn't so good for it I guess :) . I found since quitting smoking , I drink more and my tolerance for booze is higher and I won't bother with weak beer etc.
water is a good thing though as booze dehydrates you, although even drinking loads of that all the time, isn't good for the liver as you can over work it.
I won't drink if I know I'm driving, so off late that cut out any red wine or JD session until I have a clear none driving day off to recoup.
the old faithful kebab , greasy chicken, fry up in the morning a lot used to do. I guess I can't guzzle as much booze as the younger me.

Sometimes I get this too, I don't get the shakes but "traumatized" is probably the best word to describe it. I have all sorts of dark thoughts, suicidal thoughts even, and it lasts for the whole day.
Haven't had it for ages, and it's probably just a side effect of my liver telling my brain to give up drinking, but still pretty nasty when it happens.
So when i take Anadin for the headache am i risking more damage to my liver?
Googling Anadin shows it is a brand, and can have different active ingredients. Check the box, it will say what it contains. Paracetamol and aspirin are the worst in that matter.

yeah, could be something to do with it. I don't remember getting hangovers like that when I was in teens/20s, only after years of boozage. could've been something to do with dodgy chemicals as well, I used to drink some right cheapo stuff beer-wise  although iirc it would happen after Id been on spirits too.
even after a couple of years of not drinking Id still occasionally get hangover flashbacks and wake up feeling like Id had a massive beer session the previous night! luckily that doesn't happen any more. been 4 years now...

Yeah I haven't looked too closely into what I've been drinking the night before but I'm pretty sure it never happens when I've been on the homebrew or Mrs Spoons' home-made wine. I did go through a stage of drinking Skol Super and other crap like that, which didn't help :D
I don't drink from a pint glass at home any more, it just encourages me to drink more.

Maybe it's Vodka? That's a drink that's supposed to make you depressed.

Everyone has a crap game inside them, let yours out!
I used to feel better if I drank salt water or a chocolate bar before bed.
The obvious answer is don't drink so much of course :)
