Digital Holiday Sales

edited February 2015 in Chit chat
Hello everyone :D

For the first time ever the PSN "What's New" crap that pops up when you turn your Playstation on caught my attention with it's Holiday Sales bumph. It's week 2 of the sales, and I have no idea what was available on week 1 as I wasn't here in the US at the time.

Anyway it's once again a curiousity thing for me, and what I'm curious about is if the rest of the world has this and it's got the same stuff available?

The only things that really catch my eye this week are Another World 20th Anniversary edition for $5.59, Entwined for $5.99, and Valiant Hearts for $8.99.

Annoyingly enough Strider is on sale as well, but I paid full price for that a few months back. Another annoyance is I seem to have maxed out my credit card whilst in England, so I can't actually buy anything right now, should have some money on there before the week is up though.

So that's it really.

I titled the thread Digital Holiday sales instead of PSN Holiday Sales so that people who have PC's or XBOX, or another media platform can talk about what their systems also have on offer (STEAM, XB-Live, etc).

Strider was free with PS+ when I bought my PS4. Here in the UK, Sony are running a "12 deals of Christmas" thing, mainly on boxed games. Last of Us was ?18 for the first deal, but a combination of lack of funds and memory space made me miss that one!

There's also an offer on "game movies" but I've no interest in downloading films via PlayStation, so that's no good to me.

My advice for buying on the store is to never pay full price as (here at least) they run sales all the time and if you wait a little while, you'll get the game quite cheap. I wanted "The Last Tinker" for example, but didn't think it looked like it was worth the full price, so I waited and eventually picked it up for about ?4 instead of ?12/13. I
It's worth it at that price, but not full price.

BOne wise, I've really not got the hang of the store on there! I also think you need a Gold account in order to get any sale/discount offers and I'm using my trial Gold still, so I've no idea what's on offer. I was however able to by Titanfall with all the DLC for ?10 and Season 1 deluxe bundle for Killer Instinct for ?16 instead of ?32, so I was still able to get a few deals :-)

Well I never did buy anything last week....

...This weeks stuff on PSN seems OK but there's some stuff on there that's $59.99 I can't see what's so special about that?

I've not really seen much recently but the Steam Xmas sale will start soon enough. I did actually notice System Shock 2 for 69p on it the other day, but I thought best not mention it as I'd have to spend half an hour reading ewgf's post about how good it is ;-)

Good job Steam doesn't have Goldeneye or Perfect Dark for sale, or we'd have to read a thesis on both games gameplay fundamentals, and mechanics, and the reasons why they're better than every other shooter, although Timesplitters 2 comes close but not quite

Just decided to have a nosey on STEAM for the first time in ages (I use it so little that I don't even have my credit card details set up. I use it for demos really) but I decided to have a look as the sales are on and I've noticed they have Blood on sale for ?1.99. I've heard many good things about this on here, plus in Retro Gamer.

But, there are a few reviews on there saying to avoid the STEAM version. Has anyone here bought it via STEAM and is it worth getting? It'll mean me setting up my details etc and I know when I do that, that'll be me buying tons of stuff I'll hardly play as I'm rubbish like that

I have huge amounts on Steam, and while the majority of games are fine (even older stuff, Doom, Hexen, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, etc.) a lot of older games tend run better (well, more reliably) if you get DRM-free versions from the likes of GOG.COM. From what I can gather, most GOG games are patched to buggery and DOSBox emulated, and they do a bloody good job of fixing them up too. I've not come across any that play up as badly as a lot of Steam stuff (if at all.) I'd start using Steam, lot's of great games at decent prices in the sales, but for some games, i'd go elsewhere.

Blood is excellent though, from what I can remember. It's sequel is great too.

Great philosophers are never revered in their own time - in centuries to come, I'll be heralded as THE authority of the digital age, and my posts will be taught in the schools and universities of the future. And all the best looking future woman are also very smart (in the future a woman can be pretty AND intelligent - it's a whole new world!*) and they will get together and try and build a working time machine, so they can come back in time to now, and meet me.

    * I'd like to think that, as well as being smart and pretty, future women will have a sense of humour too, but that's probably asking for too much!

Just picked up Shadow of Mordor for ?18 off Steam. I know I already have it on PS4 but I can now sell that on and have the superior version anyway :-) Can't believe the size of the download - 43Gb :-o :-o

This weeks on PSN are quite disappointing if you don't like digital copies of games you can buy on a disc, otherwise the one thing on there which I think I'll download is a bundle of Castle of Illusion, that comes with the Megadrive original as well.

Yeah, I had the same shock when I was about to install Wolfenstein. 40+ Gb FFS!

I also picked up Shadow Of Mordor, but for a far cheaper price of ~$20! There is this site called www.g2a.com which has some great games going for really low prices. They give you steam keys or, in the case of Blizzard or EA, the key for the game on those stores. For instance, I also picked up Diablo 3 for less than ~$20 and activated it on Battle.Net. I'm not really sure how it works, but it was recommended to me by a pro-gamer friend of mine so it can't be that bad.

Just noticed Rogue Legacy is 80% off (?1.64) in the Steam sale. Been wanting to try this for a while as it has a rather amusing USP. It's (almost) perma-death but your next chidl/heir/playthrough will be slightly genetically different to the previous one. Traits

Boy do I wish I'd never decided to give Steam a try! I've probably done nearly ?40 over the last few days and pretty much all the games I've bough, I have on other systems  But, I've bought:

Bioshock Collection (1, 2 and Infinite)
Blood : One Whole Unit (I just need to sort the controls out ;-) )
    Duke Nukem 3D
Kane & Lynch 2 (under rated game if you ask me)
Lucius (described as an "Omen 'em Up!" think Omen meets Saw)
    Postal 2
Shadow Man (One of my favorite N64 games)
Shadow Warrior Classic Redux (bought in a package with Duke 3D)
    System Shock 2
The Tomb Raider pacakge (every PC Tomb Raider including the new reboot)
    Windosil (brilliant FLASH game)

I'm going to stop looking at the sale offers now. Probably....

Thanks for the link. I've definitely heard of them before, I think they're probably the same as what I think was steamkeys.com (although that's not resolving now). I got Dark Souls 2 from them for something like 35% of the RRP on release day. I've just found an interesting site that compares these Steam Key sellers allkeyshop. Darks Souls 2 Season Pass for ?8.40 is tempting...

Shovel Knight is 33% off in the Steam Sale right now. I can see that appealing to many gamers on here.

As the STEAM sale draws to a close, I thought I'd post an update with my final purchases ;-)

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs & The Dark Descent (bought together)
Antichamber (not played this yet, but looks nuts!)
Dementium II HD (PC remake of a DS game)
Hexen Collection (I had Hexen II on my Saturn and loved it, but it had a crippling save system, so I never got that far. Bought the whole lot for about ?3)
Quake Package (Quake, Quake 2 etc. Loads of Quake stuff for about a tenner. Also, the first time I've ever played Quake on PC :o )
The Stanley Parable (I downloaded the demo and instantly fell in love with it! If you've not experienced the demo yet, then go and download it now! It's brilliant :D )

And that's it! I was also going to buy Unreal Tournament 3 again as although I have a physical copy, it's always been very unstable and would crash at the drop of a hat. So, I thought that a STEAM version would be better. I had a quick look at the reviews to see if anyone was mentioning this (it was a common problem) and the first review said that he tried his old CD key, just to see if it would work and it did. So, I tried mine and I was playing it again within a few minutes :D That saved me a few quid there!

I've tried that with a few other CD keys, but had no joy so far :-(

Dunno about the rest of the world but PSN has a 20 year Playstation Anniversary sale on here?

It's got most of the usual tat on there, but has a few nice deals on.

They've got Resi-4 HD Edition on there for $10 which I may be tempted by, might buy it tomorrow as it's payday?

They've got a few decent looking indie games on there, and a few of the PS2 GTA games for about $4 or $5.

I think they have Okami HD for $8 as well, might invest in that as I'm not sure if it ever came out on disc in the US? Might have been bundled together with some other Clover game in a collection, but I can't remember?

If you've got a PS+ account you can pick up DriveClub for ?20 as of today. It had its launch problems but it's a really, really good racing game and it looks absolutely phenomenal, especially with the recently added weather effects. If you liked the Project Gotham games then you'll enjoy DC.

Tip: play it through headphones - wow. Apparently they're the highest quality engine samples in existence. The car companies updated their own samples with them.

Got a sale on here too, both the Tales games I picked up were on sale (Graces f & Xillia, ?7.99 each with all DLC.) Mass Effect 2 & Doom BFG were part of the sale too, I think, fiver each, bargain... Some not bad stuff in there, but i've kinda hammered my HD grabbing stuff, so i'm gonna have to stick to cheap disc purchases now.

Edit: Driveclub is PS4, not 3. Bah, that sounded pretty good too...

The Walking Dead (PC) seasons 1 and 2 are discounted on Steam at the moment. Less than a fiver for the lot. Both are really good.

I had a quick nosey on the old Xbox360 last night to see what was around and I noticed that Deadfall was on sale at 90% off and tha't a bargin! The game itself is the best. It's a bit buggy for example, but I had a great time playing through it and I felt I got my moneys worth out of it when I bought it for around ?17, so I'd highly recommend it for the under ?4 it's selling for at the moment ;-)

Worth picking up the Darksiders games as well if you haven't already got those! Great games! :)
