Ball-top Colour

edited January 2015 in Hardware
Follow-on from my Joystick Poll thread. I have decided to go with the ball-top joystick handle for my PC/Retro Computer arcade stick controller, and now I would like to ask you, my potential audience, what colour ball-top handle you would most prefer (although it can always be removed in favour of a different one by the user).

    Or amber?
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

Vote Crystal/Bubble if you want different colours such as purple, brown, amber, orange, etc.

I vote for pink - I wanna put a hello kitty logo on it xD
    Oh bugger!<br>

For a retro system, I'd go with the classic red.

Red obviously, otherwise it will colour clash with the + & 128+ ;-)

I see several users want to customise their ball-tops. No problems. The intended design is for users to modify the stick/buttons if the default ones are not to your likings (swap out a red ball top for a pink or purple one, change the default buttons to Sanwa or Seimitsu, etc.). :)

The joystick will likely be a Zippyy with a long shaft (a Seimitsu LS-32 clone with improved microswitches and doesn't have the "jump" problem the LS-32 has when pushing it against the restrictor plate). Buttons will be Seimitsu, though (Sanwa are too sensitive).

Looks like red wins (don't worry, you can change it out for another colour if you so desire for all you modders out there) - 9 buttons (standard 8 plus a 9th one acting as a Pause button when connected to a Sega Master System - this is done by connecting two opposite directions such as Up/Down or Left/Right simultaneously to Ground along with a minor mod on the console side). The joystick is a Seimitsu LS-34-01 and the buttons are Seimitsu PS-14-GN 30mm and a Seimitsu PS-14-DN 24mm. :)

Add one more button. 8 buttons covers most games and systems, but you ideally want two 'extras' to cover start/coinup and select, to allow for arcade emulation, playstation etc. That one extra button becomes very useful especially as you get into 90s gaming.

OK, I will do that - I'll need to connect it somehow, though.

I'm not sure if the joystick I want to get will fit in a wooden panel (Seimitsu LS-34-01 with S-shaped mounting plate). I'm trying to find a decent balance between size and depth.

They are the sort of details I'd work out before worrying about what colour plastic knob to screw on top.

That's partly why I thought about a Suzo-Happ part - they're longer, but they're deeper and more versatile, while Japanese parts are more compact but less flexible (can only be installed on certain panels and materials).
