The non-Nintendo ones, well most of them were a bit crap

some were a lot crap - like (grandstand?) (binatone?) football / soccer ?
    binatone tennis
    tomy - driver

one or two were not bad though

my mate had some Pacman clone that was brilliant, better than the pacman hand held, little joystick, and really fast too, and those ones that you held up to your eyes, tomy 3d? they were quite good

the Nintendo game and watches, some of those were pretty classy back in the day, and of those, some of them translated very well to the original Gameboy game and watch collection

oh yeah, and my mum refused to buy me and got very huffy about a g&w, where firemen had to catch babies parachuting from a burning building

excellent, a simple g&w that pissed parents off :-)

These arn't make favourites, I posted them earlier. However, this thread reminded me of a period in my childhood in the years preceding the Game Boy.

I remember going to spain with my parents and in some back street electronic shop being allowed to choose one of these every year. I've forgotten most of the games, but I do remember having a blue one of this racing game. If I recall correctly, it was actually quite challenging and fun.

    How simple our tastes were.

    I remember this one too.

Puck - Monster I now recall was a lot of fun. Don't think its been mentioned.

Astrowars I only ever played when someone brought it into school on the last day of term. It seemed to me like the pinnacle of tabletop consoles.

I owned a CGL Galaxy Invader 1000 in black and yellow, and Mario's Cement Factory.- I think I got them respectively for christmas in 1981, and in 1982.

I recall there was another game and watch console out with two controllers [wired] and a single double width screen (not one of the two screen Game&Watch), anyone remember it.

I remember back in the 1970s there was none of these new-fangled game and watch consoles, we had to amuse ourselves with these :-)

They don't make 'em like they used to.

I do, I remember seeing two games. These things were common in Duty Free airport shops in the 80's and always silly money. They were cream in color, kind of pill shaped and had colored fascias. One was green, the other burgundy I think.

In fact I just googled this one. There must have been more than two colours then.

According to Gameandwatch.com they were called Micro VS. A link is below which shows three games.

    That's them.

What they really could have done in the 80s (pre-game boy) was make somthing like those Micro VS, where by one could slide out the LCD display and slide in another. Hence changing the game. The slide in frame could have had contacts in leading so a small microchip containing the game code.

I'm sure it would have been doable. After all, I was buying LCD games in the mid 80s for 1000 Peseta (roughly 5 pounds).
