Ghostbusters 3 - all female cast

edited February 2015 in Chit chat
According to http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-31016868

"Bridesmaids co-stars Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are to reunite in the all-female Ghostbusters sequel, its director Paul Feig has confirmed."

leaving aside the fact that most women just aren't funny (though no one can publicly say that, as it goes against the 'freedom of speech' hypocrisy of modern times), does anyone expect the film to be any good anyway? The original was and is a classic, the second one was mostly awful, but for the twenty-five years since GB2 came out, we've been hoping for GB3, and for it to be up to the standards of the first film. But even if Harold Ramis (RIP) and Bill Murray were lined up for this new film, I wouldn't expect much, as modern 'comedies' tend to be weak and unmemorable, and at best just make you smile.

Anyone more optimistic about GB3 than me?

Was talking about this at lunch with a few lads in the warehouse. I think it's a bloody stupid idea, they should just leave it as it is. I read an interview with the director a week or so ago, and he apparently wants to make it "darker and grittier", like every other remake in the last ten years or so that's been yanked away from someone elses clearly much more creative imagination. Why does everything need to be "darker and grittier"?! It's a comedy, FFS!

    Sorry, rant over!

Totally disagree about GB2 though, I think they're both great films.

So none of the original cast, writers or director. I'd rather watch the fan-film Return of the Ghostbusters and I don't want to watch that either. An all-woman cast from the director of Bridesmaids - you just know it'll be sickening.

I'll stick with what Aykroyd said. The 2009 Ghostbusters game is essentially Ghostbusters 3.

I like GB2 too. It's not as good as GB1 but it has some cracking one-liners, Murray especially, unsurprisingly.

    agreed with every word
ewgf I think we'd be buddies if we knew each other IRL

They'll start production - realise it's not working, then draft in Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray who will be the uncles of two of the female leads who teach them all about Ghostbusting.

Thus leading to a sequel, when they can go it alone.

I really don'tike the idea of an all female cast. I read that the reason that the director wanted to do a reboot was because he didn't think it would be plausible for New York go through another end of the world ghost scenario set in the same universe or some coblers along those lines.

They could have easily done a sequel, have it set in England where everyone thought that the last two events were both hoaxes and the Americans were just over acting as per usual. The original Ghostbusters crew are all locked up in mental homes... Meanwhile in London Town some spooky stuff is starting to go down. Dana's son just happens to live over here (could be trying to bond with his real dad but doesn't get on with him as he was brought up & influenced by Venkman) and gets a team together and brings the franchise back.

Or they could just leave it alone.

I'd rather suffer endless repeats of Ghostbusters II til the end of eternity than entertain the idea of a 'new' Ghostbusters with an all-female cast that'll probably wind up with a white poster, huge red lettering, and a quote from some obscure US fish-wrapper saying "this years hit comedy."

Sorry. F**k that. I really hope this movie dies on its arse... :-)

They can sequel all they like but they'll never better the original. Just as long as they don't EVER try to "reboot" the first one......

Sorry, no, Ghostbusters was a one off, they'll never recapture its peculiar 80s wit. People just don't realise how much this was a movie of its time

    Remember Casio pocket computers?

Well, funnily enough, a mate was talking about this earlier, and he stated that he'd consider the last Ghostbusters game as more of a third movie than this 'thing' that's inevitably going to be an utter travesty. He has a point, scripted by Ramis/Murray, voice acting from Ramis/Murray/Ackroyd (i'm sure Hudson was in it too) and, it wasn't too bad...

This is going to be awful, so yeah, enough now. We've had a classic movie, a semi-crap take-the-money-and-run sequel, and three good games out of this franchise, so it wasn't quite a one-off... but yeah, bury it. Please.

No Probably Katie Brand she's equally as fat and unfunny, but younger so the part won't be so stressful on her knackered knees.

I'm sure I read somewhere that part of the plot for that game was taken from the, then proposed, Ghostbusters 3 script! When things looked like they were falling through for the third film, they used some of it for the games story. I quite liked that game too :-)

This new film will fall on it's arse though. Not because it's an all female cast (I see no reason why it should't) but because, to me anyway, none of these women are instantly recognisable and as has been mentioned already, modern comedy films, especially from America, tend to be rather unfunny! I can see this becoming an action chick flick.

It wouldn't surprise me if they rerecord the theme tune with all women too :-(

Didn't even know that tbh, but it doesn't come as much of a surprise. Story wasn't too bad, some great set-pieces. Yep, nice little game, almost as good as the first one

The NEW Ghostbusters theme, as sung by some talentless tuneless nomark who won a US talent show at some point last year...

    Nevermind.

This is quite a depressing thread, middle aged men tutting dismissively with little snips of cynicism.

Chances are this film won't be top drawer. Few are. Quite possibly the director will cock up a franchise some here have a strong nostalgic buzz about.

But lets hope he doesn't and lets hope that the teens get a film they like as much as many on here liked the first film as teenagers.

The all female cast is a brave move, no reason why it won't work because of gender (heck their lines might even be scripted by a man, so rest easy ewgf), and if some directors don't give female comic actors a chance in a major movie then you'll never know... It is refreshing to see women being given a central role in a film that isn't dependent on how they look.

I agree that few women have made it in comedy but perhaps that's not all to do with talent and may be something to do with the safety first approach many commissioning parties take because they fear the backlash of middle aged men.

Of course you may all be proven right. This film may be a disaster. But I for one hope that it won't be and hope that the people it is aimed at will enjoy it.

Its gonna be a pile of poo...

GB3 should be with the original cast set in the future a bit. So they can all be old codgers. It would be funny then.

    Offtopic but:
Last night I watched all the Count Arthur Strong episodes on BBC iPlayer. First time watching, very funny 2nd episode.

Did see anyone saying it wouldn't work because of gender, and I didn't say it would be awful. My points centred around the original and its 1980s wit.

Oh it was worse after three. :D

Guess the original writer isn't always gonna hit it big again.
