I seem to remember that they're not really rippable straight from memory - they are split into little chunks and stored all over the place. When I did this demo:

I ended up loading the game in an emulator and screencapping it to get the sprites.

Do it yourself. Shouldn't take longer than 1 hour.

That's a bold claim. What do you base this estimate on?

Probably experience and the fact that the game doesn't really have all that many graphics. I'd say I could do it in an hour as well.

optimistic I would have said. based on doing exactly the same thing 25 years ago to convert the c64 ones to 16bit.

trying to match up bits of arms and legs with moves took FAR more than an hour :) and that was with the known quantity of the c64 sprite size.

Well, it was so called "educated guess". Maybe it would require 2 hours or even 3, depending on person skill and speed.

But it isn't really hard. You record .rzx game walkthrough with all moves and grab all frames, simply by selecting, copying and pasting. It's easy to grab them as there is no background to remove. No code analysis is equired. And what could be the frame count? 20? 30? 40? Seems available to do in a hour or two.

No, but maybe this helps a bit. From Atari.

thanks but no not really, those are in fact my files which i converted 25 years ago :D

I need the mono spectrum resolution graphics for a possible project.

so far 3 hours and about half converted. everything would be much easier if the damned sprites didnt cross into the background on jumps ;)

Now, the real interesting question is "what are you going to do with those graphics?". ;)

Sorry for my 1 hour estimate :) Didn't took this problem into account.

A hint - what if you created totally empty screen .scr file and opened it in emulator during the game? Wouldn't it result in sprites displayed on empty background?

I just tried that - just for fun. :D ...but It doesn't work.

It'll update the bottom 2-3 lines of the background if anything gets close to it (even if it isn't there to begin with. Ie: it repaints the background as needed).

...but now that I think about it - it might be better to go in with a graphics editor and just remove the graphics for the background entirely. That should do the trick. :)

    https://www.sendspace.com/file/wjupz3

saved as a .sna file for emulation - works in Spin and many others.
All processing done in EmuZWin !!!!!

no background graphics on level 1. Just press 0 to go to menu, E to exit back to game/demo screen.

Yes, it depends on the game. Some games refresh background from memory all the time and other ones just draw it once at start so you could replace it with anything.

I quite often use this trick when I'm examining a game code and want to learn in possibly easy way how it works.

While you're at it, see if you can find the naked woman in the bushes from Fist II...

Thanks Mat! that should speed things up somewhat. I really wasnt looking forward to peeling the dithered guy off the background. :)

as to the project, it's nothing but conjecture atm, but it involves a zx81 and the fist 30th anniversary ;)

thats all there is to say about it atm.

yes i can. right side between/above the 2 big palm leaves. thats classic :)

You're welcome Ste. Glad to help out and I hope that it saves some time.

Yes, she's hiding on the right of the screen, reclining in the bushes. How did they get away with that?

Apparently you can get away with showing saucy pictures as long as they're pixellated.

    ...Just ask rubberkeys.
