New ZX81 Demo

edited March 2015 in Development
Jim Bagley has demonstrated a new ZX81 demo today - at the moment, it is just streaming video from CF card using the ZXpand on a ZX81, but he is aiming to make it into a playable game for May !!

See the video of the demo at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6-_48Aqso0

How about this comment on Facebook about it.
It's pretty amazing...but that being said - Dragon's Lair is the simplest game in the world, so when using the [well documented] hi-res mode - and if Kieren is right - basically unlimited flash storage, then it's not really THAT amazing after all. But still, just the audacity of trying is pretty...fearless. :D

    Any comments on that statement?

    I'd rather have Double Dragon...

    +1

It may seem cool for 2 minutes but Dragon's Lair is a BAD game (in terms of gameplay), even with all its glorious visuals.

With movies reduced to 2 colours and played slowly in a small window it will be really painful to watch.

Do that DD man or honestly admit that you won't do it.

I think we have to commend Jim for his achievements - remember that hi-res is not native on the ZX81 - he has managed to achieve this using a 6K buffer and (I believe) about 1K of code.

The Chroma81 interface could also be used to add colour to the game - I have no experience of Dragon's Lair, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out

It's all above me to be honest, but I was seriously impressed when I saw the video on Facebook yesterday! I'm a big Dragon's Lair fan, so I'd actually like to try this version :-)

    Thanks guys :D
Bare with me, Dragon's Lair, was something that I just had to do, I did JBRacing about 18 moths ago, in High-Res on ZX81 but couldn't get it working on a real ZX81 as my ZXpand board had a fault, I left it for ages thinking it was something to do with the driver, then after a long lapse, had another look and chat with Charlie it's creator, and realised it was definitely a board issue, got it fixed, which then fixed the changes I made to the high res driver that broke it on working ZXpands so it was all good, then an idea to do DL popped into my head, just as a tech demo initially, but it worked really well, so I decided to do the game, as I had done it previously on a micro controller with SD card, so it's not like I don't have the source or source art, just a matter of converting the images, and writing some code. it's not going to take me that long to do, I don't have a lot of spare time lately, what I do have spare is precious, hence it coming out in May, it won't take that long to finish, then I'll get onto DD in my spare time.
