Cauldron II Perfect game - Spell book

edited March 2015 in Games
So I've been trying to get a "perfect" run of Cauldron 2 and it seems that you need to sacrifice one life in order to get the Spell book. I've tried for ages in getting a setup for that part but it seems impossible. When you die there you'll respawn in a perfect place to get the book. Even if you mess up and fall down a screen below, after dying, your position is shifted a few pixels so there's plenty of setups to get the book. There's no tight corners nor low ceilings to get that shift without sacrificing a pumpkin. So has anyone managed to get the book without losing a life?

Hehe, yeah it's a hard game in the beginning. Requires lots of patience and practice but it's very rewarding, especially when you start getting somewhere.

Hmm, you got me interested now. Gonna load this up again soon and see if I can focus myself to get through at least 4 screens!

    Much respect to ya!

The key is to set short goals, learning setups and practice different short routes.

Beginning in the witch's bedroom and working your way up to the spell book is a great way to learn the controls. You can press "A" to restart the game until you've got the wanted starting location.

I finally did it! A perfect game of Cauldron II :) Well I lost that one life getting the spell book and until someone figures out if there's even a possible setup for that I'm going to call it here. ;)

you should record that stuff. I loved watching the other guy do his perfect JSW run. well done, chap.

I just couldn't leave it alone, after a lot of tries I managed to find a setup. :) A little tricky but not that hard to do. So it seems I was a bit hasty in calling it a perfect run. I will have another go at it tomorrow and hopefully with all pumpkins left in the end.

Thank mate! I haven't got any capture equipment for real hardware and ZXDS doesn't support recording. I do, however, have ZXSpin installed on my PC and I think you can record with that. That might be an option.

Always liked Cauldron II but it really must have one of the the most ridiculous control methods in a speccy game.

Used to think it would be nice if the controls allowed you to stop & roll to adjust your position if you wanted to, rather than gimpily bouncing around all the time.

I think the controls are great as they are. It requires some thought and strategy to get far. If you could adjust your position by rolling I think it would take away a lot of the challenge. Every room is like a puzzle, once you've figured out the setup it's not all that hard.

The Spectrum game is very playable, the bouncing is pretty predictable once you've learned the controls. The c64 version (which I still like) is much harder, with bugs, random spastic bounces and way harder enemies and enemy layouts.

I thought that was what all C64 users did while they were playing games?

There, I made it! Didn't lose a life and I did it on my first attempt today as well. :)

I will try to mess about with ZXSpin tomorrow to see if I can get it to record my gameplay and then I'll make another run.

I recorded (RZX) a perfect run with ZXSpin just now. It's around 35 minutes.

Anyone know a hassle free place one could upload this?
