ZX Spectrum and the Beano?

Or Dandy or Beezer of Whizzer & Chips for that matter.

Does anyone know if the Speccy, or any game characters made appearances in 1980's comics?

  • I can't think of any specifically speccy appearances but Computer Warrior was a strip in Eagle from the mid-80s and included lots of games that were released on the speccy.

  • Neat.  I used to read the new Eagle but I don't remember that strip.

It's a cool idea, but the true threat for the computer warrior's failure should be to get eternally trapped in the Cassette 50.

  • I was subscribed to Eagle about just before that strip started, and I remember it being a bit crap tbh. I preferred Dan Dare :)

  • Aye I had it reserved in the newsagents, and thought Dan Dare was great.  One issue ended on a cliffhanger when he was cast  into a vat of alien maggoty things, and I remember being genuinely worried that he was killed and there wouldn't be any more issues...

  • Jack The Nipper?  I thought he originated from either Beano, or Whizzer and Chips...
  • They looked into an official license as a Sweeny Toddler game but decided against it.  So it was more inspired by it.

Interesting retrogamer article with the author here:

  • ^^^ Thanks for that.
    Good article.

Not quite. The games were his first appearance, although several of the magazine reviews referred to the graphics style as 'Beano-inspired'; and YS ran a Jack The Nipper comic strip based on the game.

Thanks GReW - I'll have to sift through my pile of YSs and see if I can find the comic :)
