QL add-ons value

edited September 2014 in Hardware
I've gotten my hands on some QL accesoires:
- 2x Trump card 2, only disk interface I think (there's no RAM on them)
- 2x CARE Electronics cartridge, probably a the Toolkit II as the Trump boxes say they are included, but I'm not sure
- Miracle Systems EXPANDERAM
- Some interface 'QL-ROM' with 4x 51256 SRAM chip (128KB RAM?) with batteries
- A edge expansion board
- Centronics interface cable
- Box with 2x 9-pin connector and a plug for the QL

I'll try to test it soon (will receive a QL that hopefully works).

Any idea about the value for these parts?

The Disk Cards are actually rare - as most people went for something with RAM on it.

Given the shortage of any disk interfaces at the moment, these are worth about ?50-?60 each

They have Toolkit II included - ie. on the EPROMs on board, so the extra CARE cartridges could be anything...

The expanderam is worth about ?35-?45 - useful for the QL-SD, but without the metal case over the top, it can cause interference with the output when in use...

The battery backed memory device is rare - probably one built by a Quanta sub-group - value I guess depends on whether it is working and how much memory it has - would be nice to get a clear photo of this for the QL Wiki - www.rwapadventures.com/ql_wiki and ask on the QL Forums if anyone recognises it.

The backplane will have JFC on it somewhere - it is an unbuffered backplane by Jurgen Falkenburg - they can be useful, but value is only about ?25.

The black box looks more interesting - it might be a JFC mouse interface - who knows...

That's one more reason I'm happy with this QL add-ons and the ordered QL.
I am thinking of producing some disk interfaces.

The Trump card seems the simplest, as the Gold ones have lot's more parts.
However ?60 is not that much for an new interface, but I'll check it out (there are only a couple of parts on a board).
And I don't want to spend ages on development of a Gold card clone.

I must setup a forum topic somewhere, maybe on a QL forum (don't know which one is the biggest), about disk interface production.

The biggest QL Forum is www.qlforum.co.uk

People would be interested in disk interfaces - the main issue is that a lot of software needs extra memory too (the more the better), so in reality a Trump Card equivalent would be best (768K extra RAM) - however, you will find that Dave Park in the USA has a completed design for a replacement disk interface with RAM (UltaQ), so you could possibly talk to him about whether you could produce these....

    QL Forum

I'm on a smartphone so searching is painful, but there are threads about the difficulty of reproducing super gold cards. I am not sure if this applies to gold cards as well.

A QL expansion card with disk drive interface and 1M SRAM (although not all of this will be usable by the QL) may be worth looking into. As the card needs a ROM (for the "DOS") it would be worthwhile including the Tool Kit 2 extension ROM.

Oh and there is one other developer who is currently working on a RAM expansion (edit - see the post from RWAP above).

I'll contact Dave and ask him about his plans for the new interface.
I never want to be in someones way, but if he is not planning production, I'll ask his response about my suggestion.
  • If you will find a Gold Card or Super Gold card please advice me immediatly, thanks!!!
  • Or Original SW TOO ;)
