How do you tell if if you're a hipster?

What exactly is a hipster? As far as I can tell it's a pretentious fashion victim*, something like a cross between rrRick and Neil from the young ones.

*as Frankie Boyle said - with a beard they don't want and a tattoo they don't understand.

I might even be a bit of one but I'm definitely not a fashion victim! I tried an online quiz but didn't understand a lot of the questions about where I buy my clothes from! And importantly, I don't have a beard.

I do like obscure films involving people staring out of windows though...

the problem with being a hipster is even if you are one you'll deny being one....how ironic!

    Or is that post Ironic?

Funny thing is I like a lot of stuff hipsters like, but I'm 36, and I liked it not just before it was cool, but I liked it before it was cool the first time around. Maybe that makes me to quote the Michael and Trevor convo from GTAV on the way to the Palmeto Creek Bank job a "Proto Hipster"? =))

I own a Fedora hat, but my excuse is I'm a foreigner here, so I can get away with wearing it, and I look good in it ;)

I do not however own any skinny jeans nor will I ever own any skinny jeans, I do not own any long sleeved check shirts, and if I did I wouldn't wear them open save 1 or 2 buttons with the sleeves rolled up, and definitely not with something like a pink Hello Kitty T-Shirt underneath.

I also would not cover my entire body in tw@ like tattoos that I will have to pretend I didn't regret getting less than 2 years after I got them.

I don't eat oddball food because I think it makes me look cool, I don't eat gluten free stuff, or any faddy diet type crap that I don't need to, and I don't drink junk like Hemp 2O...

    I'm so not a hipster :D

No I'm really not sure what one is!

Good enough for me - bloody hipster.

  • There's nothing hipster about a vegetarian barbeque all nicely washed down with a sustainably cooled bottle of Purdeys.
  • Purdeys? They still sell that stuff?

  • Over here, I'd say it's the type with nerdy black-rimmed glasses (like those D-Fens wears in Falling Down) who sit around in the front of some cafe having a latte macchiato while pretending to be working on their laptop (Apple, what else). Alternatively they'll be busy on their latest Iphone, posting a photo of said latte on Instagram.
  • Are they wearing turtle neck jumpers?
    Sod it!

Anyone who eats "artisan bread", washed down with "craft beer", is a hipster. And also a c***.

Oh dear, I tick most of the boxes, I think I'm a hipster without a beard.

I'll still submit to the CGC though.

I'm assuming one OR the other is fine? Artisan Bread is sh*t rips your gums up tastes quite funky, and makes crap toast, but I'm a liker of craft beer, I'm a beer snob these days, and I don't apologise for liking "good" beer!

  • I read the other day that there are as many germs in a long beard as in a toilet.

A good reason to stop being a hipster! :D

I agree. I'm a huge beer enthusiast and a good portion of my money goes in that direction. I also love baking my own bread - although I'd NEVER wash ANY bread down with beer,

The way I see it - two things usually define a hipster: the clothing and the beard (generalizing a bit, but you know what I mean). Well, I certainly don't dress the least bit hipster-like...and whenever I go to a beer-thing I almost always make a point of being clean-shaven...becase I'm just so fucking tired of seeing beards left and right everywhere when I go out.

So, no - I'm not a hipster either (imho anyway).

  • they populate area's of London and try to make em sound posher.. sorta like Notting hill bohemian was years ago before it got more gentrified but pretentious.. there are loads in hackney / shoreditch etc and the like..

they are a bit like bandwagon jumpers. e.g. they used to listen to jungle.. then moved on to speed garage etc.

beards is the obvious thing though, oh and going live gigs etc. one of my neighbours is a wannabe one pretty much.. in his 50's I guess.. do find it amusing.

Oops yeah - I appear not to have read your post properly. I blame the new forums. Or hipsters. Or vodka.

I'm with R-Tape, I don't think I know what hipsters are... (Does that make me a hipster?) ;;)
  • Gentrification is a huge issue in many cities now it seems. See it here too.

With all said, I think it's fair to say the current forum design is certainly more hipster-friendly than the former one :-?

What I should have said is, anyone who calls home-made bread "artisan" bread instead of "bread", or calls beer "craft" beer instead of "beer", is a hipster and a c***. It's nothing more or less than marketing.

I consume both of those things on a very regular basis but I'm not a twat about it! ;)

(I don't have a beard or tattoos though - far too old now I'm 40)

  • I don't have any tattoos and i would never put a fedora on my head. But i see those more as douchebag items rather than hipster items.

I have a beard, wear skinny jeans, even stretch jeans sometimes. Tight t-shirts and tight denim jacket. I´m 45 but because of regular training at the gym i can wear that kind of clothes. And sometimes i wear my aviator glasses in true 70´s/80's style just to look cool in a nerdy kind of way, even if there are nothing wrong with my sight.

    But Hipster? No way!

Not in those ridiculous things that hipsters think is a beard. I hear they buy special shampoo and little scissors.
I just carved all my foliage off the other day for the dual reasons of the heat and need to be vaguely presentable this weekend. Prior to that I had a proper RSPB sanctuary thing going on :)
  • We all do some or all of those things, beards are trendy and plenty are wearing them today, those that can wear skinny jeans; do, some of us have tattoos from either growing up in a 'tattoo' environment (in my day it was us from the rough side of town or ex-army) or because now it too has become trendy, which is fine.

Only the ones who try to put it all together and 'create' a fashion, thinking they are original and cool and give it a name (hipster) are the ego-fashion-victim-self-imposing winkers. (sic)

A bit like that trendy London crowd that started wearing all those types of clothes us 40-ish year olds avoided when we were kids, and call themselves nerds. (Bet they can't name episodes from Dr Who or Star Trek though like a true nerdy geek.)

Grrr, I 'ate em all, bugger em the daft nerks.

  • I worked with a self-intitled hipster... And it was insufferable.

For a while he would drive us to work, and he would only listen to "indie radio" I once asked if he enjoyed it, and he said "well i'll keep on listening until I learn to enjoy it"

I blame mostly his girlfriend at the time and his friends, he really wanted to be part of that "scene".

To me, if you spend 1 hour making your beard look manly and rough, with tons of cremes and softeners, than you are doing something wrong. And all those skinny clothes... I don't get it.

I do like some of the look & clothes, but I would enjoy them more if they did come in man sizes (I'm having trouble buying clothes nowadays, as what used to pass for an M (size 40) is now in many stores an XL...

I'm sure you like tight clothes on the ladies, well it's our responibility to also show off the gods for them!
  • I always think it's funny that they claim the beard is embracing their manliness, then they squish themselves into a Hello Kitty T-Shirt and the most feminine looking pair of jeans they can find....and weren't Converse allstars only trendy in the 80's for about 15 minutes until people realized they looked completely twattish?
