How do you tell if if you're a hipster?

  • Another (related) question... what to you do if any subculture takes your look?

I have a friend (not me! my wife won't let me!) that used to dress like a lumberjack (he used to work harvesting potatoes) about ten years ago. Now it changed slightly his style (mostly their shirt), but I guess it still could be taken for a hipster...
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!
  • Call me old fashion, but I wished those baggy trousers of the 80s would come back for us more manly men.
I try and wear reasonably trendy and ended up with so called 'slim' fit trousers for work. Oh boy you sit around in those all day at a desk and the personal chaffing around the never regions is dire. Its ok for you young uns with your nice taught skin, but us wrinklies...
    Sod it!

Oops! I appear to have offended a baseball player ;)
Hah, no. It's just a weird thing to pluck out of the air when they are incredibly popular, especially in these times and pretty much always have been for a while now, though Converse were in trouble a few years ago.

In fact, here's an article from 2013 telling you just how untrendy they are.*

It's right up there with that guy in here who claimed the Majora's Mask was seen as the runt and not well liked in the Legend of Zelda series whereas in fact it was far from it.

*whether you or others think they are trendy or not, etc etc

Talking of canvas shoes, I really want a pair of (red) Hogs again...

...but it's more mid life crisis than hipster, now where's my bandana?

  • You can usually tell when you find yourself discussing your personal fashion and tastes on an internet forum, especially if it is to point out how 'unusual' they are. To be sure of your hipster status, you would have had to find yourself mocking other social groups for having inauthentic motivations for their own, similar, lifestyle choices.
    :p
  • Heheh, good point well made.
  • I would prefer these retro sneakers quite hipster
  • Here is a very educational video that explains everything

    They're basketball shoes though... :P
  • I love Converse shoes, find them really comfortable. I don't think I'd ever worn them until about seven years ago when I started working for a company that sold them online.

Not so keen on the high tops, but that's because I'm lazy and don't like to spend more than ten seconds putting on or taking off shoes.

I agree. I'd never worn them until I was an usher at a mates wedding last year - all the ushers were bought a pair of blue All-Stars to wear for the day (the groom wore red ones, the bride wore white). Really comfy. :)

If you need really sturdy/heavy/monstruous basketball shoes I always resorted to Adidas.
Nowadays they look to me lighter a la Nike, meh!

Oops! Worst typo ever! I blame alchohol ;)

Converse Superstars are alright, I used to have a pair when I used to skate years ago, problem is they don't last 5 minutes if you actually use em' for what they're meant for....oh well. But if you generally buy skate shoes to pose then you're almost as bad as a hipster :D

First post of yours I've probably read all year and you're slagging off a mate's wedding. Good to see you've stayed classy, fog. :))

This! I saw one with one of my old T-shirts on the other day!

And yeah, they're basically starting to find cool all the retro stuff people like us never stopped finding cool and have been talking online about for ages...which does beg the question, however...are we partly to blame for hipsters?? :-O

Hipster 1: (rolls eyes passive-aggressively) Pffffff! That is like, *so* plebean. *I* do all my programming using *vi*.

Hipster 2: (snorts derisively) vi? Why don't you just use Windows 10, sell-out? *I* do all *my* programming using *cat*.

Normal person: (picks up their very expensive, artisan, scalding hot skinny soy-lattes and throws them all over both hipsters)

    Hipster 1: (screams in pain)

Hipster 2: (trying to suppress it) Pain is just, like, *so* passé and I am just *so* over it...

I have to admit to liking little Miss grapefruits' rendition of Mr sandman when I first heard it some years ago.

it was the truth, sorry for not sugar coating it , I'm blunt. I was a bit miffed I didn't get an invite , truth be told ;-)

and that waitrose wedding list was a bit of a *cough* take.

I did get an invite to an "evening do" for a mate, who well.. growing up, lots of not so great things happened... and my family was around for him.. even my mum said it was a bit "BS" how short their memory was.

  • apparently the earliest photos of hipsters lol
