Wii U Question

edited August 2015 in Chit chat
My 8 year old son is planning on asking for a Wii U for Xmas, and I need to be sure of something before this may be considered. Can you play ANY Wii U came using the controller screen – leaving the TV unused?

He mainly wants to play Super Mario 3D World (or something, I’ve lost track of Mario games since the N64), but I do not want him hogging the lounge TV. Thanks for the info….

  • PS thought I'd put this in Chit Chat but it's ended up in Emulators. Tried to edit it, but it won't seem to move. I REALLY miss the old forums.

  • Pretty much every game I've played lets you play the game directly on the game pad. I think Zombi U is an exception, due to how the game works with the pad, but that's not a kids game, so won't be an issue ;)

MArio 3D, Mario Kart etc are all playable on the gamepad alone. Most games let you switch by pressing the " - " button IIRC.

You can get to a game without the need to change the channel too! Which reminds me, the gamepad also has a TV remote function built in for simple things like changing the channel and volume controls etc. You may want to skip that part of the set up ;)
  • No u can't.

A lot of games use the gamepad a a secondary display for maps and such. Splatoon for one.

It's abit hit and miss though a some can and some cant.

I'll ask the boy in the morning about which games he has and which ones u can use the pad as a standalone display though and post back.

Same as above, but I'd say there's more than not, a quick list from my son brought up Splatoon (fantastic game btw!), Lego City Undercover, and a couple more, the Wii games can't be directly played by the gamepad, but the gamepad can be used as a screen along with the wii-remotes.

    Here is a list:
