Gold Train in Poland

Was listening to the radio this morning and the guy was talking about a train that has been found in Poland buried since the end of the war and possibly filled with plundered loot.
what I'm finding a bit strange is that no image of the radar that picked it up has been released.

Odder still is that the train has been searched for 70 years. No-one seems to have thought to foĺlow the train tracks as far as they go despite parts being used as a tourist attraction.

Is this one of those silly season stories? It just seems a bit of a non story when no train has actually been found.

What do you think?

  • Yes, it's a very popular story in Poland. What we know so far is that few guys discovered the train but they can't "extract" it (it is undeground or something). So they made few GPR photos, sent them to Polish government and said that they can reveal train's location for a price of 10% of gold. One of Polish ministers said that he saw the GPR photos and he is 99% sure they are real.

Consumer ground penetrating radar kit doesn't produce an 'image' as such - just a continuously changing waveform on a screen. Even if the kit has a dowload capability (many don't) the waveform wouldn't mean a lot to most people. To produce a meaningful image you need software that can combine multiple waveforms and filter out background noise caused by soil density, water content etc. Since the train was 'discovered' by an amateur grandfather/grandson treasure hunting team its likely they don't have access to the technology to produce images.

I am surprised that an enterprising journalist hasn't just put an oscilloscope on demo mode and taken a photo of the screen. :)

  • How far down is this train? Is it buried i.e. surrounded by soil or is it in a blocked off tunnel?

I am assuming that those who hid it wanted to get it out again so the tracks will still be there?
Why didn't the bloke who knew where it was return and start digging?

Have no experience in hiding trains or in radar so am a bit in the dark about this.
  • Do you think it might be a hoax? The gov guy seemed to think he saw a train with cannons but if you can't get equipment to show a clear photo which hasn't been released, then how will anyone know?

It does sound a bit Jones film in the making.
