People only hate it because it's change. In a couple of years no-one will remember what the old logo was like anyway.
No, lots of changes are legitimately for the worse, and this is one of them, though admittedly this change is very slight, and is only slightly worse than the original.

Ah yes, the good old days; when web graphics needed to be "CGA safe". :)
4 to many colours for CGA. graphic. I still suffer nightmares when thinking of cyan and magenta filled screens of graphic un-goodness. it would be EGA safe however.
