CBM Studio Equivalent

Hello,

With WoS not being at its best, I have been looking development tools available for other platforms and have come across CBM Studio. Does anyone know if there ZX Spectrum equivalent?

  • Um. An equivalent? You really don't know about the speccy equivalent that can "allow you to type a BASIC or machine code program and convert it to a '.tap/.tzx/snapshot' file, which you can then run in an emulator or on real hardware. It also includes character, sprite and screen editors and a fully featured z80 debugger"...

    Oh my.

As I am unable to select more than one :-O
Here is the list of retro computers that I have:
    • ZX Spectrum (various models)
    • Psion Series 3, 3a, 3c, revo, Series 5, 5mx (the 5mx gets used daily when it's a work day, as it's my alarm clock thanks to excellent Agenda App where you can set up complex entries)
    • ZX80 (needs repairing)
    • ZX81
    • QL
    • Memotech MTX500, MTX512
    • Atari ST, STFM, STE, Mega, TT, Falcon
    • Commodore 64, 128
    • Amstrad CPC 464, 6128
    • Commodore Amiga (but don't use much)
    • Acorn Electron, BBC B, B+, Master 128, Master Compact
    • Acorn Archimedes (various models)
    • Sharp MZ-700
    • MSX (one machine that I have not powered up yet, bought with some others that I wanted)

Paul, I know all about BASin and use it often and it is a great piece of software you have written. But where BASin is an emulator of sorts, CBM studio is more of an IDE and a native application for Windows.

And BASin isn't a native Windows application? It's not an IDE? It doesn't have an assembler, a BASIC editor, a sprite/charset editor? A screen editor? Many tools for working with BASIC and asm? etc etc. I don't see anything that CBM Studio can do for a C64 that BASin can't do for a Speccy...

I'm not sure you quite understand what an IDE is :D

Hi Paul. Well the author calls it an IDE so that must be both him and I who don't know what an IDE is?!?

I love BASin and SPIN is my emulator of choice so please do not think for a second that I am being critical. I'm just trying different tools.

  • Hell No, I wasn't suggesting that - the author quite rightly calls CBM studio an IDE, because that's what it is. BASin is also an IDE, but it's one that also includes an emulator.

I've got an Aquarius, TI99/4a, Psion Series II, Epson HX40, Atari Portfolio...
  • I mostly use Spectrum and C64.
    Besides them I have Amiga, Amstrad 464, 6128, C16, plus 4, ZX81 and a lot of peripherals.
  • Agreed Paul. I looks as though CBMStudio links to Vice or similar rather than having a built in emulator. What I was trying to say by native app(badly I agree) was that I quite liked the layout was that of a traditional windows based editor. Sorry for any confusion.
