Paris attacks

A full day has passed, and I couldn't find a single thread on the subject here on WoS.

You guys don't watch the news anymore? :-/
No 'urge' to discuss these events on your favorite forum?

  • I'd have posted something, but I certainly was not going to be the first to do it.

    It's awful.

That's all I'm saying for now, or possibly at all.
    Every night is curry night!
  • Not really no. The internet is already sufficiently saturated.
  • these type of threads rip communities apart lol, never discuss race, politics or religion

I think the Russians have come to the conclusion that the best way to defeat IS is for the Syrian government to prevail, so they can then take on IS. The alternative is for the various rebel groups to keep fighting amongst themselves and against Assad with no end in sight whilst IS keeps gaining ground, which is what's happening at the moment.

And the reason it's not been discussed here already: Politics, religion and web forums don't mix.

  • it is worth having this thread, just in order to point out why we shouldn't have it.
  • I was going to post something about Jihadi John yesterday as I thought the name was so ridiculous that you could not make it up.

Then this heppened, To be honest with you though RetroTechie WOS is a place of pure escape, a little home online to get away from the doom and gloom of all the sh!t things that happen real life.

  • Every time we start a discussion like this it always ends up with people falling out and the thread gets locked. As horrible as the Paris attacks were, i'm not getting involved.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • I agree with the sentiments above, WoSF isn't the place to discus these things. I don't recall us really doing so with 9/11, 7/7 or any other atrocities. Jason Manford pretty much summed up my feelings about it all in his Facebook post that he was forced to delete.
  • Things of such a horrible nature are more suited to C64 related forums.
  • thats a disturbing video, of the moment the band stopped playing as the gunshots were louder than the band

Not necessary to have a dig at the C64 here.

Spreading hate is what the terrorists are doing.
  • Probably best for all if I just bail from this thread right here. Enjoy.
  • Can't really discuss this without envolving religion. We all know what religion that is.
  • We could talk about ridiculous Sky News hosts posting photos of dogs and twitter absolutely ripping the **** out of it :)
  • just misread the title as 'panic attacks'...
  • as long as it wasnt penis attacks chris ;)

Point taken, and I might add: +1.

That said: every once in a while there are those events that you 'can't get away from', and... you shouldn't either (imho) regardless where you are. For example I remember when 9/11 events made the news, I totally dropped what I was doing, watched, and talked with house mates about it. If I had been working then, I'd have stopped working for at least some time. If I'd been shopping then, I'd probably have dropped that, gone home & watch reports.

A similar thing happened when the Berlin wall fell... I had been there on a school trip (when it was still up), and felt in my guts how happy how many people would be. Clearly a world-changing event that would also put other events in motion. So that entire night was spent glued to the telly.

Okay these Paris events weren't that big (in comparison with 9/11 - or Berlin wall for that matter), but big enough to stop & take note - even here on WoS.

Oh and as for "real life doom and gloom": visited some Jehova's Witnesses recently (friends of my gf), and one of them was trying to convince me that it's easy to see 'this world is going down the drain, just watch the news' - or something along those lines. FYI: fits in nicely with JW's teachings.

But you know what? She couldn't be more wrong. It just looks that way because modern day news makes our world feel smaller & smaller. And most news is the **** happening, not the good stuff.

But if you look at the numbers: there are less and less people who don't have clean drinking water - both in absolute and relative numbers. Yes it's still waaaayyy too many, and it's still an enormous problem. But much less than it was 10 or 20 years ago. Same with food - yes people are still starving. But for most people on this planet today, eating too much is a bigger hazard than not having enough to eat. Long-term trend in war deaths: less and less and less as time passes. Yes many wars are still fought, but these days it's much more local / small scale, as opposed to world wars / large blocks of countries fighting.

I could go on, but you get the point: yes tomorrow some stupid mishap could happen & put our world in nuclear holocaust. Or a 5 km+ meteor comes out of nowhere & wipes us all out. But until that happens, we're not doing that bad as mankind. Not bad at all, really - especially given how many there are of us by now. Same # of people that got killed in Paris, will be killed in a week (or so? just guessing there) in traffic accidents across France. Yesterday's news, because that happens every week. Just to put things in perspective...
  • i dunno if this has already been mentioned but Anonymous is upping their "war" against Is in cyber space

  • The England France match at Wembley tonight will have the unusual opening of playing Le Marseillaise after God Save The Queen. They're encouraging everyone to sing it and I expect everyone in the stadium to do so as two fingers up at IS. It could be a hugely powerful image of humanity standing together as one against murder and tyranny.
  • Does anyone know the lyrics?
  • I did wonder how many of the English crowd are going to struggle with God Save the Queen, never mind singing in French!

  • La Marseillaise is brilliant. Really stirring. Looking forward to everyone belting it out. Should be quite a moment.

    You ain't kiddin'!

    Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
    Against us tyranny's
    Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts

To arms citizens Form your battalions
    March, march
    Let impure blood
    Water our furrows

What do they want this horde of slaves
    Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
    For whom these vile chains
    These long-prepared irons?
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
    What methods must be taken?
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!

    What! These foreign cohorts!
They would make laws in our courts!
    What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would cut down our warrior sons
    Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brow would yield under the yoke
The vile despots would have themselves be
    The masters of destiny

    Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
    Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
    Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heros
    France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you

    Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors
Bear or hold back your blows
    Spare these sad victims
That they regret taking up arms against us
    But not these bloody despots
    These accomplices of Bouillé
    All these tigers who pitilessly
    Ripped out their mothers' wombs

    We too shall enlist
When our elders' time has come
To add to the list of deeds
    Inscribed upon their tombs
We are much less jealous of surviving them
    Than of sharing their coffins
We shall have the sublime pride
    Of avenging or joining them

    Drive on sacred patriotism
    Support our avenging arms
    Liberty, cherished liberty
Join the struggle with your defenders
    Under our flags, let victory
    Hurry to your manly tone
So that in death your enemies
See your triumph and our glory!
