Redundant buttons

Like decelerate in Deathchase - any others?

Comments

  • Sword button in Halls Of The Things.
  • The 'hover' button in Jetpac, considering I didn't know it existed for over 20 years...
  • All of the control keys in the original release of SQIJ :D
  • The pause button on early Ultimate: Play the Game games, because you had to continuously hold it down for it to pause the game. Stellar bit of design, that one!

    Me neither ! ...
and also...talking of decelerate...if there is a brake button (in most racers) it's pointless.. you just let go of accelerate if you know what's good for ya.

And accelerate - might as well just be constantly accelerating.

  • The short range grenade buttons in Ant Attack.

You could also change the view angles using 0, P, ENTER and SPACE. Did anyone actually use them?

  • oops reading the tittle sprung to poor mind the boobed mutant whore from Total Recall. In this sense of redundancy having mulltiple keys for the same function would help on tablets if you weren't born with three thumbs

Yes and very helpful they were. The same keys were used in Zombie Zombie

I've just tried it, it seems to be the top row...
(Comes to not having the instructions.)

This might be a good time for me to keep quiet about having the original tape and instructions. :o

  • I knew you could press DOWN on the joystick to do it, but it was so counter-intuitive I don't think I ever used it.

  • Crouching tends to have absolutely no use in a lot of run-and-gun games

If you're asteroid mining in Elite, the side view is pretty useful. It's better to put mining lasers at the sides and have a offensive weapon at the back of the ship.
  • How about the "sweep back wings" button in T.L.L.?
Although it was undoubtedly cool because it made the already impressive scrolling go even faster, I don't think there was any point in flying faster was there?
In fact, you really had go the slower speed just to navigate around the objects at low level and hit the targets.
I can't help thinking Costa Panayi got the idea for the Tornado Low Level from the notion that the Tornados often were flown very low to avoid radar detection. Then he had to somehow incorporate into the game the aircraft's swing wing ability, even though it's not needed in the game!
  • I think there was a time limit to get all the targets, in which case flying faster - higher up - got you to each area sooner.

  • Well there wasn't really an "area" to get to as such. All the targets tended to be within a screen's width scroll of each other. And flying faster used fuel up quicker.
I found I had to refuel partway through clearing each set of 5 targets anyway, even at slow speed.
  • It also affected your turning circle. Judicious use of the sweep button would allow you to position yourself better.
