Why do people around here favour Spin/Spectacular?

Quite. I'm a cheapskate, but I didn't hesitate to shell out the money for Spectaculator. It's worth every penny. Plus the one-off upfront payment entitles you to receive every new release free of charge! You can't argue with that!

Come now usspeccyfan, instead of spending all your pocket money (allowance?) on sweets (candy?), save up for a copy of Spectaculator instead. Then perhaps you'll be so absorbed in it that you won't need to write quite so many useless posts here...

I've paid for the registered versions of z80 3.5 (DOS) and xzx (Linux). I haven't gotten around to buying the full version of Spectaculator yet but I will eventually. :)

To be honest, Phil - Karingal has done a great deal for SPIN in terms of support and encouragement. I'd far rather have that sort of a contribution than the monetary variety.

However, I've been working on SPIN for a number of years now, and Jon's been working on Spectaculator for about the same length of time. If he wants a little gain (and it's really only a little) for the hours, days, weeks of hard slog then he's more than entitled to it, imo.

The original question was 'I think all emulators should be free' which was implying that the choice on whether to charge for an emulator should be removed and the author expected to provide the code for nothing.
It is entirely up to each author whether to he/she wishes to be paid for their work, I have not paid for an emulator (I've never been one to refuse a free lunch!) but if I had to pay I would do so immediately (probably Spin).

And you think that giving them money would have helped all that?

How twisted. So by your logic, if we bombed Jon, and killed his mates, he'd stop charging for Spectaculator?

I really don't like the way your mind works.

They also knew what the chances of getting any post was like and decided that it was not worth asking for payment because they'd never get any cheques through the post... :D

I think you've beaten your own personal record for strangest post !!!

At the end of the day i can see why some people charge for their emulators and some dont, i can see both sides. Also at the end of the day you arent forced to pay for Spectaculator, can even find the free version on the net which was previously released.

But all this Warejevo stuff ?!? Jesus talk about far fetched. For all you know the creator of 'xxx' emulator for the Spectrum might not have a job, might have a long term disease, might have lost his parents to cancer, might be in financial trouble etc so theyre in a pretty bad spot just like the other guys as well

My history of emulator use goes as follows:-

    spectrum (for the Atari ST)
    zx128 (DOS)
    z80 (Win32)
    zx32 (win32)
    Spectaculator 5.2 (win32)
    Spin 0.54 (Win32)

Spectaculator was by far the best for a long while, but I just kept having this recurring problem with it. The windows menu bar would just not dissapear in full screen mode. I tried also the 6.x trial versions, and they seemed to have the same problem on every windows XP machine I tried it on.
Certain Windows autoupdate patches seemed to fix it for a while, and then the machine would autoupdate again, and the problem would just keep returning.

I'm very happy with Spin. I can't use Klive, because I just have so much software in TZX format.

So, for me Spin is the only realistic choice I have right now under win32.

z80 won't do full screen mode, and zx32 is not as good an emulator as Spin IMHO and also very old.

Welcome to the forums Digital Prawn :)

I keep trying Spin but games I try just never work. Last one I tried was Rana rama and it just resets after loading. So I keep loading up Realspectrum and away it goes.

Shame coz the Spin munus are a lot easier to use.

    Thanks for the welcome, dekh.

I'd forgot about realspectrum. Well I suppose that's another possible future option for me, if I ever stop using Spin for any reason. But touch wood - I'm fortunate enough not to have had any problems with it. Possibly because I haven't tried to play any of the games that you have tried to play on it yet.
    Cheers, Digital Prawn

Odd, I never have this problem and have used Spectaculator on WinXP without problems. For me, the menu bar (and mouse pointer) dissapears after a few seconds, and comes back on-screen when the mouse is moved.

Yes, it is a strange one.
I used spectaculator for quite a while, without having the problem. It started about 18 months ago.

Since then, I have had the problem both with ATI and Nvidia hardware. I always use the latest windows service packs and updates, DirectX, and video divers.

I also think this problem is mentioned somewhere on the Spectaculator website. I've never bought Spectaculator, so I am obviously not entitled to technical support.

My guess would now be that it is conflicting with some software I'm using on my computers. I suppose one day, I'll try it on a fresh Windows install, and see if that cures it.

    I use Spin,Realspec,zx32,R80,x128 ,winxzx,wspecem14 , (old emus).

My spectrum files are associated with Spin at the moment.
I use Real spectrum mostly, because it is integrated in SGD and it works under WinXP.

I used to use ZX32 but since I got this laptop and seeing it doesn't work properly, I use Spin for playing and I also use one of the other emulators for video capture.
