Rip David Bowie

Another music legend gone.
I didn't even realise he was ill but he'd been battling cancer for 18 months.

  • Can't believe it. One of the true greats.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • Sad to hear it.
But from the news this morning you'd think the Queen had been bumped off.

  • RIP David :(
  • First thing I thought of when I heard the news (after "What? He's the Goblin King, he can't die!") was this song. Bowie's in space...

I know what you mean, and my 10-year-old son made a similar point ("why are they talking so much about one man, what about all the people in Syria who are dying?") But to me (and most people I know) David Bowie is way more important than the Queen!

I had no idea he was ill either, so this has come as a complete shock to me.

    RIP David Bowie.

  • Yeah once again read this while I was at work, almost as much of a WTF? moment as Lemmy :O

And the Syrians. I couldn't even name one of those who had an impact on my life.

  • Personally, I was never a fan of his, but he was very popular with lots of people (though that doesn't seem to justify, for example, the BBC news front page having five out of their ten top news links (seriously!) currently about him).

Anyway, RIP to a very influential and popular entertainer.
  • RIP David Bowie

  • As the WOS resident Bowiemaniac, I am shocked to say the least. I feel like a longtime friend of mine has died.

And I didn't know about his 18-months battle against cancer either.

The Starman has definitely left us...
  • Seriously, sheit no please!!. Oh my that's so sad. He really was a pop idol for me.

  • I think it was all over the news because of the suddenness of it.
Same as Lemmy, died shortly after his birthday and just after a new album release.

David Bowie is far more important and relevant than the Queen will ever be.

    RIP Starman

I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...
  • There was a girl at school who was into Bowie, so I feigned an interest to talk to her.

And then I realised I did like him and a lot of his songs. And his appearance in Labyrinth.

Amazing to think Space Oddity was released the same month as the first Moon landing, and his latest album was released on Friday. What a career.

Yep, and an incredibly varied career at that, he was always pushing himself to try new things. Like Maroc said, he was a true individual, truly original.
  • Very bad news.
As the others not knowing he was ill, this was a shock !
    RIP david.

Yep. He started from nothing, worked very hard to climb to the top, and did things the way he wanted to do them. She was born a royal, has achieved nothing since then (apart from not dying, which the pro-royals seem to think is something somehow special), and does or says nothing that isn't scripted for her.

  • interesting how some folk "don't get" how influential he was over the decades (not years like some others)..regardless of what you think of his music. there aren't many big muso's around now or that produced work that long

I had an inkling something was up due to the new albums name and the lazerous track and there was plenty of rumours due to the prior release... if you watch a lot of his stuff there is a bit more under the surface. he was a magpie / chameleon , and very good at that.

it was partly him and folk he worked with, if you look at the long list. esp. folk like Mick (Ronno) Ronson

    RIP

  • I'll always listen to Sound and Vision...

He also was as much an influence in sic-fi, for me as any sci-fi author. Those early songs sparked my imagination about alien life etc. along with 'The man who fell to earth'. Those shots of Newton's home world and family really gave me something to think about. I think I saw it about the same time as the TV series Martian Chronicles.

Thanks Mr Bowie, the after life is due for some brilliant new songs. RIP.
    Sod it!

I'm mainly a fan of his earlier stuff music-wise, but what a career! Singer, Actor, Alien, Goblin King... He's even been in Spongebob Squarepants! :)

But aye, really sad about the loss of a true star... :(

  • This is lovely. Bowie was marvellous in Extras.

  • Like a few others who have posted on here, I can't claim to have ever have been a big fan of Bowie but I seriously feel quite upset (I've had a couple of drinks). It does feel like a pretty significant person has left us. It's a bit weird.

  • I always had a lot of respect for him, he stayed true to his vision and didn't bow down to the corporate people (such as the puppets that Simon Cowell have) and never jumped on any bandwagon.
    There'll never be another Bowie.
