    maiden - book of souls

4t or 5th time Ive tried to get into this and each time I can only manage about 1 and a half tracks... its not horrible but just mediocre imo. really wanted to like it :(
Interesting, I've not heard it but all reports I've seen really rate it.
can't speak for anyone else but IMO bruce's voice is not really there any more (except for on the title track where he sounds great for some reason) and nearly every single track sounds like an inferior re-hash of something they've done at least once before. also the production is a horrible mess and way too loud/harsh, even for metal...
They did say Bruce's voice is only about 70% there currently. Takes a while to get over cancer.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...
  • true, think it was recorded before he found out he had problems iirc...

probably still a good experience live

Seen them live a couple times, great live show.

  • Book of souls is a good album, their best for ages, a proper grower, has a real prog rock feel to it, harks back to Rime of the ancient mariner for me, nice long proggy tracks

Not sure what to make of this, it popped up on a friend's arsebook timeline a few days ago and I was intrigued. You can have a listen here. Or not.

they sound like tunes me and a mate used to make back in the 90s on Rave Ejay when we were drunk.

  • Not awful, not great, a little pretentious....ah whatever...
    Every night is curry night!
  • Sounded like someone trying to do what Orbital do ( / did ).

    As good as that? :P

Pretentious? Don't know what makes you think that... doesn't every CD "come in a heavy 400gsm leather-tied polybag with hand-stamped card, full-colour tri-fold image and printed tracing paper. Each bag has been dual eyelet-ed by hand and sealed with a knotted real-leather strip" these days?

Hipster beard-oil wankery aside though, I like it, particularly the ninth track - I'm sure that's a (processed) Speccy lead tone from about 3 minutes onwards.

Ha, that's weirdly hypnotic after a while, like TV static, or heavy rain on a caravan roof - not sure Lemmy would want to be remembered this way. I lasted 3 minutes and then fell asleep.

  • I was listening to the 'No Remorse' Motörhead compilation last night.

Just reminded how great songs like Dancing on Your Grave and Killed by Death were/are :)

I've never been a Motörhead fan (only really knew a couple of the singles) but got the double CD greatest hits a couple of weeks ago (£2 in a charity shop) and was moshing away to it in the car this morning. Better late than never!

I had a demo version of Dance Ejay when I first got my PC and it made everything sound like bad Eurotrance or Vengaboys B-sides.

  • from what I remember about making a track you'd start off with an endlessly repeating 'bom..........bom.............bom..........bom' sound that began playing before you even did anything, and then as you added more sounds in it would just get worse. good times.
  • I always fancied trying Hip Hop Ejay when it came out, but what I saw of it it looked proper sh*t, and that weird turntable mousepad for scratching was the big no-no that put me off it...

Although I'm pretty sure the full package was something ludicrous like 200 quid, which was more than enough to put a jobless stoner off anyway.
