Name of this buggy racing arcade machine?

Can anyone remember the name of a racing game I used to play in the arcades back in the day, around the time of Afterburner and Gauntlet? I remember it as being like Buggy Boy but on a beach and when you hit a hill/rock you flipped in the air. I actually thought it was Buggy Boy but after looking at YouTube clips it definitely isn't. I've searched for Dune Buggy and Beach Buggy racing with no results. Any help appreciated, thanks.

  • Ya nailed it with Buggy Challenge! Thanks! The arcade audio is murder on the ears :-/
  • I guess you went to youtube? There's one vid with audio that sounds like a corrupt sound set in MAME, but here is one that's much better:

I've never heard of the game, looks cool, also like a possible inspiration for Nightmare Rally?

Cheers, this is much better audio - This was the first Buggy challenge vid I watched but I thought the sound was duff as it doesn't kick in until about 40 secs.

I was just thinking the same thing - that most likely Nightmare Rally began with someone making a clone of this then for some reason having to re-jig it for sale without the licence.

Look at how the car jigs up and down as it goes; the life counters are racing buggies, not cars, and at 3:48 the car hits the side of a mound and rolls in mid-air.

Also how the car is obviously a Mk III Escort instead of any sort of off-road vehicle suggests a hasty re-design!

Perhaps an update for the database:
